I am going to go buy a router today to run my PC and XBOX off of. I would like to know the best one to get. I'm not sure what info you guys will need to answer this question, so I will just tell you what little I know right now. I'm completly ignorant when it comes to computers and gaming systems. Hopefully that will all change.
ISP = Cox DSL Cable
Modem - Motorolla surfboard (Im not sure of the model, I think it is 5120)
I have about 50ft of ethernet cable ran from the computer room to the room with the xbox.
This is probably just question 1 of many I will have. I just want to buy the right router.
Thanks!

Most Routers will work perfectly fine, mine is a Netgear and it's never let me down (Y)

Most routers will work fine, but some require some extra set ups.
But, if you're perfectly willing to do what MS tells you (with the idea that if you use a router they tell you to, you'll be more likely to get support from MS), here's a list they put out:

Ok, thank you. I thought any might work, but I didn't want to spend money on something and it not be compatible. I'll pick one up today and see how it goes. I tried to hook my xbox up directly to my modem. I got all kinds of IP failures, DNS failed... I talked with xbox support, they really didn't tell me much. We will see if using a router makes a difference.

I'm assuming that you didn't reset your modem while switching the cable from computer to Xbox, and that's the only reason I can think of.

I purchased a router. Dynex (DX-E401). It's a 4 channel router.
I hooked everything up and went through the instructions on setting up the router with their "wizard". Nothing seemed to work right. I'll go through what I did to the best of my memory.
Ethernet cable from the PC to Port 1 on the router. Ethernet cable from WAN on the router to the Modem. The lights came on on the router showing a connection. When i did this a message popped up briefly and I didn't get to read it all. It was something to the effect of "Local area network, access limited....?"
I'm guessing there is something wrong in my internet connection configuration but I am not sure.
Please dumb down any replies you have. I am by no means a computer person!! Thanks.
