Gotta echo BIG D 04 and derekm91, from what I'm aware you can't without Media Centre.

This is an old piece of news due to a mistake made on MS websites, supposedly. Anyways, I already fell for it, and it's already been debunked:

In case the other replies aren't clear enough, there is definitely no way to do this right now. Like someone else said, there was some miscommunication on Microsoft's site but this has since been corrected.
They're really trying to incentivize getting the Media Center version. I'm hoping that they will support all versions of Vista.

phatmuther is right , the latest update has added the ability to stream from your pc/usb drive/cd/dvd to your 360.
However it only supports WMV's.......which is pretty much useless.

just get a video converter program, i use 3gp video maker, its ment for making videos to put onto a mob, but it has the option for mpeg2, which works on 360.
i use it to convert lost, south park, prison break etc so i can watch them on me tele :)
