Sony makes up bogus factsheet against 360, wii

I can't tell if its fake or not. The thing doesn't like to an official sony link, it has the 'factsheet' on that page but its a word file not a pdf which makes me further go hmm... But it does look pro and it wouldn't surprise me if they actually did XD

Well. It's misleading, and they're wrong in a couple of spots, but.. What's "bogus" about it? Seems like Engadget just didn't quite understand what was going on.

The whole misleading part comes from the words "REQUIRES USER TO BUY"

Given thats pretty much all it says, it implies (hence, 'misleading' or bogus) to the average person that those things are necessary in order to use the console ie play/watch movies.
You dont need a HDD or the HDDVD to play or watch movies (that aren't HD-DVD) and well if you check their PPS they clarify the point about wifi and HDD's.


And ontop of that they compare to the core bundle...

That would not be bogus, it's called bending the data in your favor. Companies do it a lot to make them look better and their competition worse.. but the required things, I doubt anyone who doesn't know they're not will ever see this sheet.

I'm thinking it'd be more misleading then bogus, and if you aren't used to it by now where've you been for the past years?! :)

I suppose they should have made it more clear that they mean in order to be equal in functionality, but that was pretty obvious, to me anyways, when they included the Live Gold subscription and Wireless Controller. I mean, could you really come across from that thinking that MS requires you to buy a subscription if you have no intention of playing online? And why specify Wireless controller? If you flat out have to buy it, why not just call it Controller? It's because the Wireless Controller isn't included in the Core bundle, and they're talking about what you'd need to buy to have similar functionality.

They are wrong that going online requires some sort of storage device, which is odd. Also, doesn't the 360 have an optical out for sound?

Yes, and the fact that buying a wireless controller on top of a Core bundle would actually make the 360 have two controllers isn't exactly fair, because the PS3 only comes with one, so they have more on the 360 then they need to, which jacks up the messed up estimate even more...

What the world do you mean m8? Of course there is competition, there are other consoles aren't there? Even if you think they aren't going to sell that doesn't mean they aren't competing! And to say the Wii can't be counted isn't correct, they meant that they aren't directly competing, but to say they're not is totally 'bogus', it's still a console, and there's a possibility it will outsell the others. That's definitely competition :|

And as for the PS3, yep that's going to sell, I don't think the 360 is going to beat the PS3 by a large margin. If there were no PS3 the 360 would sell more.. yet again, Sony is taking sales from MS, so they're competing.

I spent £215 and could play games, why do they list everything you don't need like xbox live and the HDD? even a wireless controller for god sake, I don't have one and I have been playing the 360 since February, load of bs.

I'm skeptical of that source that says MS is preparing legal action. Though this might be actionable, I don't see any real evidence that MS is going to do something. But I wouldn't be completely shocked if they are doing so. I'm just saying that some post on the official forums by a random webmaster who's getting information from the original Engadget 'we hear' statement isn't exactly mindblowingly solid.

And while I originally said that I understood the "if you want to attempt to come close to the performance of the $499 PlayStation 3 by using your Xbox 360, Core or Premium, you could only do that through expensive add-ons" attempt they were making, I will now say that the idea that some unwitting sales assistant at a Best Buy not assuming such is pretty compelling. And considering that the fuller text of Karraker's statement is "Once you add it all up, it would cost you more than our $499 unit, and you would still not come close to everything we offer, ie: free multiplayer gaming, 50GB storage capacity of Blu-ray disc, Blu-ray disc player for games AND [emphasis his] movies, processing power of the Cell Broadband Engine," well.. This is still going for misleading. After all, part of that 'add it all up' was the cost of a Live subscription, so you do "come close" to the "free multiplayer gaming."

Smells real to me though... seems like something Sony would do. I mean that sony rep was right, it could be about the value of the box if they only worded it different.

It's not a hoax. Officials at Sony directly responded to all this, and didn't disavow it. Furthermore, I doubt Engadget would have said there was a press release from Sony if they actually got it from some third-party random source.

Engadget was presumably given the file in an email or something similar by Sony. No reason for them not to host it, really. And I think you're making too much of an issue about being a .doc instead of .pdf

Well I think the Thread is Dead... but to give it a send off.

Whether your a Sony Fanboy or MS Fanboy or neither I think everyone can agree that deceiving consumers to get a one up on the competition is very low, very low indeed.

Sony have a good product with alot of potential and yet so do Microsoft, if they would stop bish bashing each other and actually blow there own horn for once we could decide for ourselves based on the facts we get given rather than on what they want us to think.

They blow their own horns all the time, D. And even if that's all they did, they'd still distort facts at least a little. The facts we'd get given would still be what they want us to think, except only about their products instead of their products and the other guy's.

Besides, most consumers don't pay attention to the specs on the box, let alone what Sony released and some-website-they've-never-heard-of posted.
