It can range from Athletics to Football to jumping out of the sky! What is your favourite sport?

I have to say mine is Skateboarding, it used to be Football/Soccer but then I made the choice of dropping one of the sports and I dropped Football/Soccer and I believe I made the right choice. :)

hmm...I like to play poker (Texas Hold'em), 10-pin bowling, and go-karting. Let this be known: I've been playing Texas Hold'em way before this year's World Poker Tour, which has made the game extremely popular. Quite a fun game, my friends and I play it (recreational of course) when we go over to eachother's houses. I usually win by going all in when I see that there's a chance of a high hand from the flop despite the fact that I have nothing...Get's 'em every time!

I still refuse to accept darts as a sport, but I can't help watching when it's on TV. I used to play it when one of my mates had a dartboard as well, and I got pretty good. Obviously couldn't hit the doubles and trebles all that often, but I could work my way around the board pretty well.

Always meant to get myself a dartboard as well, but never got round to it.

.

I view it as a pub game rather than a sport. Same with snooker. Competitiveness doesn't make it a sport. Loads of things aren't classed as sports despite being competitive. Videogaming, for example.

Not saying it's bad or anything, because as I said I find it quite enjoyable. I just can't get to grips with it being called a "sport", when it really isn't.

Well, it's like tennis and badminton in that it's a raquet sport, but it doesn't have any nets or anything like that.

Players have to instead take turns hitting the ball off a wall, and the ball isn't allowed to bounce on the ground, or the player who fails to hit it loses a point.

So, yeah, it's just like badminton, but with two players on the same side of the court rather than there being two separate sides.

Yup, yet you're still a fairly big team in terms of international footballing quality. Quite worrying, that.

About 5% of your population probably gives a crap about football, yet you give a beating to countries like mine, in which probably about 95% of people love the goddamn sport. :D

If America did start to follow "soccer" as much as its other sports, then you'd probably be on a par with Brazil within a few years. Easily.

Killer 57

Yeah I know what you mean. When the USA beat Mexico in the World Cup, my Uncle cried his lights out and so did a couple my Family members and Friends, I was pretty sad aswell,it was the Best Team we had in decades and it was suppose to be are year. Yet my Neighbor who is American didnt even know it happened.

AfroJoe
01/Apr/06, 01:35 AM
It's quite sad, that. The fact that in 2002, the US got to the quarter finals of the World Cup, and probably only about 20% of the population at most knew they'd achieved this.

I wonder if they'd sit up and take notice if your lot actually won the thing.

USA, that is. Not Mexico.

By the way, I'll be getting a Mexico top for the World Cup. They're my 2nd favourite team in the competition behind Paraguay, whose shirt I'll also be getting.

Yeah, I want to see Mexico doing well. They should get out of their group fine, because it's not too difficult. Then we'll see how they handle the knockout stages.

Blanco is quality player! If you think about it, USA should really be the best "Soccer" team in the World, the size of their country. They have that many players to choose from, there must be some quality talent. I'll be keeping a close eye on them in this World Cup though, to see how my boy Eddie Lewis is doing. But yeah, I agree, it is pretty sad the USA doesn't follow Football, as they are pretty good at it.

'Surprise' key to football appeal

The element of surprise elevates football above other sports
American football, basketball and baseball have millions of followers, but they can't match soccer for sheer excitement, says a team of scientists.
The reason is its element of surprise, claim researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, US.

Football is more likely to produce an unexpected result, such as a "giant killer" win in the FA Cup.

Scientists analysed results from more than 300,000 games played over the past century.

They reviewed five sports: ice hockey, American football, baseball and basketball in the US, and (Soccer)football.

The team decided to make unpredictability - how often a leading team is overcome by an opponent with a worse record - the best measure of how exciting a league is.

"If there are no upsets, then every game is predictable and hence boring," co-author Eli Ben-Naim told New Scientist magazine.

The results of the analysis showed that the "upset frequency" was highest for soccer, followed by baseball, hockey, and basketball. American football came last on the list, and so was labelled the least exciting sport.

But there was a twist in the tail.

When the scientists looked only at data from the past 10 years, English Premiership football and baseball swapped places.

One interpretation of the finding might be that soccer has become more predictable in recent years.

There we go!!!

WACCOE
01/Apr/06, 06:54 PM
Yup...I also am a big fan of American Football so im not going to argue religiously, but I certainly thing that Soccer is a country mile more excting. When they score in American Football the fan's don't even cheer. :brow

Killer 57
01/Apr/06, 06:58 PM
Thats a Joke, Element of Suprise last time I checked Brazil has won the World Cup Every ****ing time! and American Football has a lower upset rate because they only play 16 games, so each and every time the team must play there best. While in Baseball they play 162 Games so they don't really care if they lose one game to some cheap team. But the most Redicules part was this "American football came last on the list, and so was labelled the least exciting sport, since when does Upset frequency determine if a game is exciting or not.I cannot believe that article is real.

Yes, you don't know when the 1st goal is going to come, it could just be a split second thing, where as in American Football you have a vague idea when the touchdown is going to be scored as it clearly when the Attacking team get closer to the End Zone...that's the whole element of suprise thing. Oh yeah, you might wanna be a bit more accurate in this statement...

Excitement right through 45 minutes to 90 minutes to a whole season. All the way through there is something going on. The game is played at a brisk pace. So whenever the game is stopped for 5 mins over an incident, its always contraversial.

Have a look at the goals thread and there you will see excitement
