...I don't really know what I am looking for.

Have arrrround £500 to spend...was looking on eBay earlier but didn't know the good ones from the crap ones, tbh.

Would rather have it used but in good condition so I can get it for cheaper, rather than paying for a brand-spanker. :)

Edit:- Would probably prefer an Apple. :s

Cheers Ladies.

well theres shed loads of good ones on ebay.

go for a 15" powerbook or 14" ibook (try to get the powerbook)
dont go with a 12", they are useless.
get a G4 one at 1.33ghz, 1.42ghz or above
512mb ram minimum, more the better.
and then hard drive, not sure what you want on it, music movies etc, bigger the better, but 60gb would be good (Y)
also be good to get wireless in there, an airport card.

Well I wouldn't know how to help you as you plan on buying from eBay (which I don't use) and you don't mind a used one.

To concentrate your search your better off posting what you want out of it...

Is it for Gaming or College Work?
Windows or Mac?
Software you want to run?
Expectations, Speed, HArd Drive Capacity?

All the kind of things people would want to know if they could suggest one.

Laptops as such I don't really know about but Apple Laptops seem to be popular for Students but if your on an ICT course then your'll be on Windows nearly all the time so it's pointless.

Just a thought...

I just want one for leisure use really. :D

Show-off and that innit.

Thanks for the help there Phatmuther. :) There are quite a few of 12incher's on eBay, thought that may be a little small. Will take it all in when searching later. (Y) Repped.

They may be the best but I think Alienware prices are a bit out of TB's budget.

Actually, I'd be surprised to find out that they use different suppliers from Dell or LG or anyone besides the budget, no-name monitor-makers. Alienware's always struck me as paying-a-premium-for-a-cool-brand-and-little-else.

A bit like Apple then, Blaze?

Well, with Apple, you're paying for a whole proprietary setup. So, more than a brand name and a logo, you're paying for a lifestyle in a sense.

Have you looked into Acer TB? They are a pretty good brand offering much cheaper prices for laptops of the same spec.

I heard they were crap.

:s

I think my parents are putting to it towards my Crimbo pressie now. So my budget may take a raise. Don't just wanna dive in and buy any old one, though.

well, ave a look at dell anyway, i got 3 machines in my house, all from them, quality is great, hardly any problems in all the years weve had them, and the tech support is superb, they will stay on the phone for hours trying to help you, and the calls are free.

Don't go round telling your friends that. Nearly every laptop made in the last 6 years has one. :p

A good laptop? Well... if you're on a tight budget (which you are), I'd recommend looking on eBay. You're not going to get a better deal elsewhere, I can assure you. I have a friend who bought a laptop which can play all the latest games for around the £500-600 price bracket.

As for Dell and Alienware... they always strike me as complete rip-off merchants- they offer mediocre systems for astronomical prices. As far as desktops go at least, it's so much more economical to buy the parts individually.

Dell... rip off? There prices are excellent for there laptop and computers. Plus there customer service is great.

I will agree that Alienware are expensive. But we all want one lol.

What's more, if you're getting stuff from a local supplier, you can just... drive back to the place and replace anything that's not working as it should. :P

KatzModel, as hit it in the head. It shouldn't be a cheaper option to buy the part's individually but it is as I've done it and so have many people I know.

The only thing that's lacking in the "Build your own" option is the fact some you just can't pull off looking cool....Like my iMac ;)

lol fair enough.

But still...
But that doesnt make Dell a rip off company. I know it's cheaper to build a pc. I built my own. Where I live all the local computer shops charge sooo much to build a custom pc.

As for Dell and Alienware... they always strike me as complete rip-off merchants- they offer mediocre systems for astronomical prices

Alienware are expensive but I would hardly say they machines are mediocre. You are paying for the name, a nice case and a machine spec which is going to be the best there is. I would never buy one of there PCs but if I was to get a laptop I would buy it from them and they offer amazing laptop systems.

Dell do offer mediocre systems as they are based around buisinesses and homes. The adverage user doesn't need multiple core processors or a flux copasitator. The prices are great though and like I said before there customer service is the best. :)

BTW yeh my family do own a Dell laptop. We bought it about 5 years ago. My Dad uses it now as a wireless youtube machine. :p
