View Full Version : Recommendations for a new ISP, please.

Now I'm sure that there have been a couple of these threads about, however I couldn't actually find one.
Our ISP (Plusnet) was really good for a while, but lately it's just been silly. We get disconnected every other day and lost the net completely for about 6 hours today. Their customer service is also shocking. So we're looking into getting another ISP for the second phoneline.
So I'm looking for recommendations. Which ISP's are good/are you using? And what is their download limit, etc.
We can't get Sky broadband in this area yet.

SBC Yahoo DSL, Super Fast(15MB), and Never had problems with them, connection almost never drops, although they seem to have trouble with Wireless Networks as those frequently lose signal, but that might just be all the trees around this area.

I'm not sure you can get that over here in the UK? :s

I'm also looking to switch ISP's I'm currently thinking about Sky Broadband as they said they will be in our area by december. Failing that I will just get a better offer from BT since I've had hardly any problems with them in 18 months.

I'm currently switching to TalkTalk, they seem like a good company to me, they even upgrade the exchanges themselves to get you you're 8meg broadband, but due to the high numbers of customers, it takes a while. I'm still waiting and it's been over a month now.

TalkTalk are one of the worst companies to switch to. I know at least 6 people who have switched and regret it. 2 of them have been waiting more than 2 months to get connected.
I switched from Bulldog to a new company called Xifos.
I pay £23.40 for an 8meg line with a 100gig per month download cap.
When I was with Bulldog my line would drop around 10-15 times a day which was no use for online gaming. With Xifos my router has held connection since I switched to them on the 8th of September.
I had a query that I needed an answer to and they responded to the query within 30 mins. This was good as I emailed them after midnight.

I am currently on Orange (as it has just changed from Wanadoo). The package i have is Wireless and Talk. Connection speeds of up to 54mps - unlimited downloads and a free phone line to use after certain times to call anyone for nothing (which i never use).
Not a bad service considering you get a wireless hub network ''livebox'', but if i am honest the server and service is not as good as when it was Wanadoo, even though they are the same company. Having said that i have had no real major problems. The cost is around the £22 per month mark - but you can also do a deal with them where you can get a phone contract for £30 per month and get the broadband thrown in for nothing! (no strings attached apparently!??)

Hmm, Orange sounds good. According to my housemate who has been an Orange customer for years they offered him some deal recently.
lenselven: What do you mean by 'but if i am honest the server and service is not as good as when it was Wanadoo, even though they are the same company. Having said that i have had no real major problems.'
What problems did you have?
What does everyone think of Pipex?
I have been with Demon for the last few years and had no problems. £19.99 with no usage allowance and 8Mbps line. I had a few disconnection problems to start with but that was my sucky modem. Got a new router and all was good!
Their customer service is pretty good plus you can go online and text chat with tech support if you need to. Overall not too bad. I am sure there are cheaper around but the service is overall pretty good to me. My area can only get 8mbps as maximum so all the good 24Mbps stuff is out of my reach unless I move.

Pipex would have been my number one choice until recently. I was with them prior to switching to Bulldog and would highly recommend them. The only fly in the ointment is the fact that they now traffic shape on their ADSL lines. If you use the internet quite a bit during peak times then they will introduce a speed limit on your line which they then wont remove.
I advise going with a company who dont traffic shape at all if you want to get the most out of your ADSL lines.

No major probs with Wanadoo - just sometimes they would update the server security with having a livebox and that could take up to a day - but they always let you know. Also when it changed to Orange i had to reset and spend a bit of time seting up my wireless connection - but there shouldnt be a problem now unless they change their name again. No real problems ever with my ISP. Ask around a see if any are offering free trials or deals etc

Bulldog is the worst company I have ever dealt with.
Their whole operation is shoddy. The only good point is the genuinely unlimited downloads.
Their billing department are mince.
Their Customer Services are mince
Their Engineers took 4 months to resolve my connection problem and are mince.
I had to report them to the ISPA twice during my time with them. I got so bad that the only way I got any action from them was when I got the Head of Customer Care's Mobile Phone Number and Private email address and started harassing them.
When they suspended my line for a problem which was supposed to be rectified in Feb was the last straw and I switched to Xifos.

the amount of people that cant get talk talk working amazes me, we get loads in work with them that and AOL, i am with NTL not really any probmes i know people slag them off but mine is good. not a lag yet on LIVE plus also get a fast download on market place.
all ADSL lines are owned by BT so if theres a problem with the line you ISP has to get BT to fix it, so you might as well go with BT., because if you have a problem ISPs always blame it on ur PC anyway.
also just because some ISOs are free does not mean they will be any good. Free normaly means Pooness.
Rant over thanks :P

BT are another company that Traffic Shape and are best avoided. I have also heard that the Home Hub they are currently advertising has major teething problems.
