“Yes, it is true. As part of our standard and ongoing process of analyzing repair data, we recently noticed a higher than usual number of units coming in for repair. Upon further investigation, it was further discovered that the bulk of the units were isolated to a group that was part of the initial manufacturing run of the console. Returns for repair are coming in for a variety reasons and it’s a higher rate than we are satisfied with. We’ve made the decision to comp repairs for consoles manufactured before January 1, and provide refunds to the small group of customers who have already paid for repairs.”

I wonder what the UK stance is if the unit dies outside the standard 12 month guarantee?

I'll be feeling a bit nervous playing my 360 this Xmas and New Year.

I am on my 2nd 360. I could only get a core on launch day so I purchased the Premium pack in late January when they started filtering back into retail. Touch wood, but i have no problems with it other than a few random dirty disk errors.

One of the guys I work with has just had his machine picked up by MS for replacement following the 3 red rings of death though.

The article mentions the starts of a class action. Apple ran scared at the iPod's class action, and was replacing batteries as far back as the first generation. If your console was from that bad batch, I have a feeling MS will just give it up even past that 12 month mark.

i was on my 2nd 360 but ive just had to send that one away (the 4th time all together) because of the rings of death again

im on my secondone ihadalaunchday syesterm so itwas built in 2005 my new one has a 2005 date as well not keen on having to get a 3rd if this one goes
