Might sound obvious but Why not use Component Then? How come you needed to change?

I also thought Component was better for my TV but different people have different experiences.

What kind of tv/monitor are you using? Specifically, find out the native resolution, and use that and only that.

Don't recommend resolutions without knowing someone's native.

when its all plugged in via the VGA cable, goto settings>display and then change the resolution to something high (Y)

I can't say it enough. Using your LCD screen's native is more important than anything else. Read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_resolution

When you don't use your native, you get stuff that looks like:

how do we know he is not using a CRT monitor?

Blaze Lord

Can't say for sure, but if he just switched from component to VGA without switching displays, then he's almost definitely using an LCD. Even if he did switch displays, there's almost nothing that'll make something less crisp than component cables, except for a bad rastering. It's been my experience that 9 out of 10 times someone complains about VGA not looking as good as component, this is why. The other 1 is just placebo effect. Besides, I'd rather think that he didn't know about rastering and native resolution, than think that he didn't bother setting it to something higher before making a post. Setting it to something higher to be more 'crisp' is fairly intuitive. Knowing the difference between CRT and LCD resolutions is definitely not something someone could just guess at.

i just though he could've had the resolution set at 480xXXX, or 640xXXX. i can go down to that on my VGA cable, and thats what it first booted into the first time i plugged it in. It did not look great :D

Blaze Lord

Yeah, but RBF already told him to set it to something higher than that, and he seemed to still be less than pleased.

Well, if your native resolution is what you're telling the Xbox to output, then I'm stumped. As for sound, you know the VGA itself doesn't carry sound, right?

As Blaze Lord said the vga cable doesn't carry sound so your gonna need something like: Dual Phono Adapter (http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/AD003.html) and then hook up another phono cable into your amp reciever or your television.
If your going for the surround sound option the VGA cable has an optical out in the part you plug into your 360 so u can just run an optical cable from that to your reciever/amp/tv and hey-presto sound. If your tv has an optical input i reccomend using it as the sound will be much better than the phono option.
hope that helps from the sorting your sound out point of view and good luck with getting the picture upto scratch

I got sound on my VGA but it's using the headphone socket, you get a split adapter for two wires with your VGA cable.

Dead Rising has vsync problems though, but overall the picture quality on all games is far superior.

Yeah I bought one in the end. I couldn't get any sound at first and I don't really want to use the headphones socket I might just run it through my home cinema surround kit instead. Failing that I got the missus' father coming round today and he used to be a tv repair man/maintenance man he'll sort it for me if not :). The picture does look slightly better with the VGA either that or its my eyes.

Why not use the headphone socket? as far as I know it's just the same, but it is weird why it uses it in the first place, but I ain't complaining :)

Do you have any problems with games? aka the vsync on Dead Rising or a white border on Tiger Woods 06 etc.

Hahaha it gets better every time, now the VGA looks great but runs like crap, Dead Rising is kinda stuttery with vsync problems and SR is stuttery aswell.

I buy an £800 TV, the default picture is shocking, the HD cable is shocking and I buy a VGA cbale that is perfect but stutters too much. What the hell?

I am going to phone them up tommorow, sorry for ranting on about it but it's a disgrace you can buy a HD tv and get a picture as bad as this, and to make matters worse my PS2 doesn't work aswell....

If your PS2 is scart you put it in the right scart socket right? The 2 sockets are different. Also by HD cable I guess you mean component right? Cause a HD cable could be HDMI, VGA or component.

It's all set-up but the picture is just rubbish, it's all squashed and frizzy, it just looks dire, maybe it was that game but when I can be ersed I will try more.

I ordered a cable when I got the 360 that had a switch for HD/SD along with two options for blue/green/red etc.

I have tried everything, I have put it on SD and then on HD, difference is minimal, so I bought the VGA cable that cost £20, the difference is immense but as I said the games stutter, it's on 1024 resolution on the xbox and tv.

I am stumped, everything on the tv sucks, whether it's the PS2, 360 or normal tv, even DVD's suck on the 360, I just don't get it.

these are teh cables you want!! pretty much teh best cables you can get (also come in component + fibre-optic): £60

EDIT: woooo, thats $60, which should be £35, but is in fact £40 cos the UK gets ripped off: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000EDRMCW/kelkoocpc-21/ref=nosim

Digital Cable is a digital cable IMO. If there was a £90 HDMI cabl which was in a sale down to £20 and there was a cheap HDMI cable for £5 I would pick the £5 difference. It's ONES and ZEROS. I might be able to see the difference on some top kit but not on a £800 LCD.
