Well, it's not the right shape, so I'd either have to squish or crop to make it wider. Which would you prefer?

Either, I don't know the difference between squish and crop. lol

Squish means that everything that's in the image will still be there, but the dimensions will be off. His face will look fatter, for example.

Crop the dimensions will be the same, but the top and bottom of the image will be gone.

Same here, I don't like the stretching either. But I also didn't like cutting off his chin and his hand, which as you can see, had to be done.
