I don't care what people say about him he was an awesome chap...
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -- Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the ``Crocodile Hunter,'' was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.
Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane.
Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef but refused to say who the victim was until relatives had been notified.
A rescue helicopter was sent from the nearby city of Cairns, and paramedics from it confirmed the diver's death. ``The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest,'' Hamil said.
Staff at Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, said they had heard the reports but could not comment. Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry ``Crikey!'' in his television program ``Crocodile Hunter,'' which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.
He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.
Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his 1-year-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other.
Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations.
Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken.
Irwin was also seen as a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections.
Irwin told the Australian television program ``A Current Affair'' that ``killing one of our beautiful animals in the name of trophy hunting will have a very negative impact on tourism, which scares the living daylights out of me.''
He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Oregon, and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.
RIP Irwin

My mate told me about this a little bit ago...
I think it's sort of ironic that he got killed by a sting ray when he's a crocodile hunter.
Anyway, yes, Steve was a cool guy (Y) Sad to hear he died

Man, I cannot believe this. :(
This guy was a great entertainer and brilliant to watch, even if I didn't like this sort of stuff he made it interesting and fun to watch.

Tis a shame and I can't imagine what his Wife and Kids must be going through.
However. You might have seen that episode of South Park where some Australian guy put his finger up the crocs... bum hole...
What I am getting at is if he was pissing the stingray off... well... That’s a bit foolish
apparently he dived into the water and it attacked him....
definatly hand on heart feel sorry for his kids and wife
i used to watch that australia zoo as well, on a sunday morn before i jumped on xbox

They say the poison it's really the dangerous bit, it's more the 20cm barb going into your chest.
He apparently wants it aired on TV well accvording to the trustworthy and reliable Daily Star :)

What, steve irwin?
Yea he was quoted as saying that if he ever gets killed he wants it caught on film and his last word to be "Crikey"
Now how true this is, is questionable... However he does seem that kind of bloke and it would also match very well into his messages about Animals.
He does mention this relating to a Crocidle so it appears he defiantly didn't expect to go out like this.
I don't know if I could watch that. I was given a DVD called Streat Brawls and other stuff like that. They showed some people getting shot and some girl getting beaten by a gang over 50 people. They both died and I felt sick to the bone.
If this does get on the net there will be no posting of the link people. K?

His family have turned down a State Funeral by the Queensland Government... but I think he should he was an Average man who was a Iconic figure of Austraila and Wildlife Conservation.
He should be publicily remembered that way and I hope they at least get a memorial for him.

However its more of an insult as he didn't deal with Turtles mainly anyways.

So I hear Germaine Grea (I spelt that horribly wrong didn't I?) was talking some absolute trash about Steve Erwin to some british news paper. About how he deserved it and how his kids should learn from his death to stay out of nature and some rubbish like that...

Germaine Grea is an idiot... Stay out of nature, why when he's taught me so much about Wildlife and educated Millions about the Dangers of Wildlife and Conservation. Granted he was a bit of a show man but thats what you need to get attention but the principle remained the same.
I doubt she will let them air the footage, we should remember him diving into the water to tackle a croc, not laying at the side of it dead while people try to revive him.

steve irwin was a great guy, even if you were down, he made you smile, he was a top entertainer, no one should have a bad word about him, i certainly never heard him have a bad word about anyone else
I agree, he did alot for everyone and I guess that's why everyone was in mourning, I seen an episode where he helped out an army exercise by removing all the deadly snakes in that area, who else would do this? risk getting bitten so army recruits can do their exercise with no fear.
He got stick over the way he treated a croc I think, but the guy loved animals so I don't get that, he was shooting for his film thing and said he wanted a break because the snake was getting annoyed and he didn't want to do that to it so he did put the animals before anything.
Did I mention he almost had a heart attack when he seen a snake in the water? he broke a branch and tried desperately to catch it, the things he done for animals was immense, some people wouldn't even do it for another human being.
The guy was amazing really.

Well life is about answering so many unanswered questions and we do this everyday. But life's most unanswered question is "Death" so that's why we have such a yearning to know more...
As few people have or will ever witness an individual die?
