Microsoft have announced that xbox 360 will be getting new CPU, this CPU will be smaller that the one used currently. The new CPU will be built using technology that can reduce heat and power consumption, as well as potentially increasing speed. It will also help Microsoft cut the console's cost.

So will that mean that new 360's will be faster than old ones? :s

They will not be faster than the old ones, but they will consume less power and generate less heat. also they will be very efficient.

...and M$ might, just might actually break-even with the cost of the consoles and the sale prices.. I seriously doubt we'll see a drop in the retail price any time soon due to this new upgrade.

Well maybe if an old one breaks then a nice shiny new one will come through your door with the new CPU but yeah this is old news:)

I was just reading the article...says the first new-CPU-360s will go on sale in 2007, and by that I'm assuming they mean in the US..

awww...screw it! I want one now! I'm already waiting for Spore to come out in 2007, don't wanna have to wait for a frickin console..

This happens to every console....it's nothing unexpected.

as long as it sorts out over-heating problems for the new people buying consoles I suppose it's a positive.

Even though this should of been in to start with.

Yes, but it really isn't that big of a deal. And I don't think any price cut scheduling will be affected by this at all. Unlike Sony, MS isn't risking everything on the Xbox. In fact, they're risking hardly anything at all. They can take a loss on every system and still smile right at Kaz. I think as soon as the early adopters grab up all the PS3s, MS will undercut their price point even more, and prevent the mainstreamers from ever going near the PS3.

Tom, this happens all the time...in most cases you won't even know the hardware's been revised, you only notice it when they change the casing along with it.

MS haven't moved manufactuer of the new chips because of heat and power issuses. It's because the new chip costs less to manufactuer and that the rest is just a bonus.

This won' start appearing until Jan 2007, they will be distributed the same way the previous versions were however moe than likely the US will get a bigger share but that would be down to consumers. Theres more potentialconsumers in the USthan here.

Yeah I heard this as soon as the 360 came out that they were planning on shrinking the die size in the near future, I thought it had already happened though.

aslong as they dont make faster ones and they are only less power consuming and cooler i cudent give 2 ****'s mine never overheats anyhow and my speakers are tht loud i dont notice a tiny xbox fan whirring in the background lol, never crashed either! :)

More powerful ones can't and won't happen. These are consoles.

He's right, you can't have some consoles with different specs for running games it takes away the whole purpose of console gaming.

there is no way inda world they would release diff xboxs with diff spec, thats wat computers are for. wat the rumor prob means is that thev found a cheaper way of manufaturing the CPU for the price drop!

They have Headshot thats all it boils down to...They have found away of reducing the way of manufacturing the chips which also has the benefit in being more power efficent and less heat produced.

It comes down to money thats all...Same Chip just different Manufacturing Process

well thats pretty gay. im sure they wont recall any of the old ones to put the new ones in. Im sure you'll have to pay top dollar for that.

Blaze Lord
09/Sep/06, 09:53 PM
...Pay top dollar? No, there won't be any replacement plans at all. But there will be almost no noticeable difference to the end user. Really, this isn't something you should be caring about.

Yea this isn't like a Recall, this is just a modification. There is nothing wrong with the old chips it's just cheaper to produce the "new" ones and they give the same result technically however they do reduce the heat and power use.

Blaze Lord
09/Sep/06, 10:28 PM
Right. And heat and power consumption is something most end users won't notice at all.

yeah, its not hard to keep your 360 cool just make sure its in an open space with no obstructions at the back of the thing then ur set also make sure your power pak is well vented, if u keep that up then theres no difference from the cheaper cooler ones
