well if you want the best graphics card available that could cost you £500 by its self. You do need a good processor for a gaming rig, which depending on what you want could be from £100+
then you'd want at least 1GB of ram, so £60.
then all the other stuff mobo, hdd, case, cooling etc etc
your 360 not good enough :D

This is my specialty - I love building custom rigs,
All the components are available from Overclockers :)
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-175-AM) £72.49
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB ST3250620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £48.95
Asrock 939SLI-eSATA2 (Socket 939 & Upgradable to AM2) PCI-Express Motherboard £43.95
OcUK Value 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel Kit £55.95
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) £126.95
Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 CPU Cooler £5.95
Liteon DRW-6S160P-05C 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) £18.25
OcUK Value Estar 7799 Case With 400W PSU £25.30
Subtotal £397.79
VAT £69.62
Total £467.41
The above PC would last you a good while and has the capacity to upgrade to the latest AM2 chips when they become common place.
The Athlon chip can be overclocked beyond FX57 speeds with just the Artic CPU Cooler. Toss in a few case fans and you will have a great gaming rig.
Asrock mobo? I would of said a ASUS or MSI board would of been a better choice.
Plus I wouldn't of gone with the OcUK brand RAM. You have to get a decent make of RAM of your going to get problems. Crucial or Corsair would be good.
But there is no thing as a cheap gaming rig. You pay for what you get. I made a rig for £1300 3 years ago and back then you couldn't get better. Now it's outdated and I will be using it as a media Center PC when I get round to building a new one.
Mine:
AMD 3500+ o/c 3700
Connect 3D X800 XT PE o/c X850
MSI PLat 2 mobo
Tagen 480 PSU
74GB Raptor
250GB WD
Very expensive Wavemaster case

For the budget the ASRock is a cracking Mobo, its also highly rated in Custom PC magazine coming second in many tests to boards which cost double the price.

Dude, are you kidding me? A Pentium 3 and 512 MB of RAM for games? hahahahaha....
First of all, I have a Pentium 4 2.2 ghz AMD 2000 something with 1GB of RAM, and a 128MB Geforce FX 4 or something to that extent, with a slightly different model number. Well, I'm just gonna tell you, this thing runs like a mother friggen piece of crap on games. Battlefield 2, all the textures are white and all messed up.
You can't go cheap if you wanna play BF2.
But apparently you already have a P4 with 768 MB of RAM?
If that's the case, then you don't need to build a totally new one. You could probably keep the processor, depending on the speed, and you could keep the case, mobo, and all of that stuff. Then you could add 256MB of RAM more, and a newer video card.
Cheap, and easier.
Or you could use Bingo's suggestion but there is only one thing I would change, and that is I wouldn't put in a 64 4000+, I'd just go for the X2 4400+, since there isn't much of a price difference, and it's dual core instead of single.
As for the custom computer builders I can offer you absolutely no help, you'll really have to find out for yourself since most places like that aren't huge retail chains.
just red a motherboard test:
The best - Asus p5wdg2-ws - & - MSI k8 rs482m4-ild
2nd best - MSI k8n diamond plus
cheap - winfast 6510k8ma

Ah be quiet phat, I can never get the AMD names down right :p.
For like 2 years there I had no idea what the hell an AMD was, thought it was maybe some kind of alien chip or something. Then when I got it I had no idea what 2600+ meant, I thought it was some crazy super $1000000 chip or something that I got in a $600 computer.
But that was 2 years ago when I didn't know anything about computer hardware, now I'm good since I've been looking a lot over the past few months and have learned quite a lot (Y)

Cheap gaming computer is an oxymoron. If you want to have a frame rate of more than... 2, and graphics that look better than an N64's, you'll need to shell out. There's no other way around it.
