According to SCEA president Kaz Hirai, there is most likely going to be a PS3 shortage:
"Even if you do the simple math you're talking about less than 700,000 units per territory, per major territory, between launch and the end of the year. So even if there was some fluctuation - you give Japan more, you give the US more, what have you - you're going to end up with some shortages,"

You hope?
Guys, seriously, this isn't news. If you ever for a moment thought the PS3 wasn't gonna sell out for months, you're suffering from delusions of rekonkulousness.

The only shortage I know of is this shortage of cash to afford this ridiculously priced console. But yeah I agree with BL.

The real news here is the way Kaz is softening the ground for the PS3 launch. There 'may' be some shortages. Realistically, any expectation says there will definitely be shortages. In fact, haven't they bragged they'd sell out even if they had no games?
Perhaps the real issue here is.. Is Kaz worried the PS3 won't sell out everywhere?

When you think about it, with 2,000,000 PS3's spread across all the countries then in the US across all the states you end up with maybe 1000 or so in each state/country, which is impossible not to sell out.
It's been to much in the press lately he had to make a move to make people think about something else.
what he was really saying was don't think about the games that are not coming, dont' remembe that we are not producing yet maybe next year and don't remember what we have said before it's the last thing we say that counts.

Very well said. Good point.
The main reason I was picking up on this was because I remeber a Sony press conference from sometime this year (about 6 months ago maybe) in which it was clearly said 'We will not make our competitors mistakes which is why we've pushed the release back'. I tried finding a link to the conference, but couldn't find it.
Anyone else seen it?
I remember it too!
I red a interview on EDGE with the guy that is the software director for the PS3 this was around E3.

There are bound to be shortages. They say they've yet to start production....for November? Sony are killing themselves here! :(

I think there's bound to be shortages don't you think,
i think though if you use the smarter option by ordering early you will be ok.:geek:

Prolly not. The 360s didn't satisfy all of the preorders until like.. mid Feb.

Yeah. Some places like Dixons are already taking pre orders now.
I won't be getting one anyway. I can just about justify my 360.

It's not a ploy. It's a limitation of reality.

Erm how is buying something and selling it for more to someone else "wrong"? It's called merchanting and there's nothing "wrong" about it, the people are willing to spend the money so it's their problem. I mean hey their town or city is probably sold out but if they really want it it's kind of a nice thing to do to buy one from where you live and sell it to them, sure they're getting ripped off but eh if they want it that bad I can't feel sorry about that. You're helping them out, so you should get something out of it too.
I'd love to do it, but I don't want to spend $600 in the first place :)

yeah, theres nothing wrong with it, if sony fanboys want to pay an even more stupid price for a PS3, its their fault
really wow how interesting
