According to EGM's Dan Hsu the Sony Playstation 3 will be awarding their own version of Xbox 360 Achievements but will be calling them "entitlements."
During this week's EGM Live podcast, Hsu, the editor of EGM, said he had heard that Sony was going to call their achievements by this horrible name that could only come from the brilliant minds at Sony.

You can't beat the Original!
Although it was bound to happen, I think Microsoft themselves underestimated the mass appeal Achievements would have.
Sony tend to Jump on anything their competition has that could intise customers away from Sony. I'm not saying Achievements are a selling point but the Novelty value is deffaintly there.

It's not like putting a patent on a kettle.
But some things just can't be patented. Or, rather, are so unlikely to be patented that a patent attorney will recommend putting effort into something worthwhile.
Instead, some things get trademarked. Which is why Sony can't use the more intuitive and natural-sounding Achievements.

Wow.. Entitlements..
It's obvious Sony is panicing, they're stealing every idea people like and putting them on the PS3 thinking it will make it the best of the Wii and 360..
Honestly that is the stupidest name ever, I'd have rather them do "Sony Points" then that.

Entiltlements? WTF? What are you entitled too? Spend £60 on a game that uses sony's (expensive dvd format) blu-ray.
They should not have copied m$ ides - makes them seem desperate to succeed!
What's better: 1)You have achieved 1000GP or
2) You are entitled to 1000GP
I know everyone will say 1

Thats not the best name that they could come up with surely? That sounds awful. Yay! I've just unlocked an entitlement just sounds plain wrong!

Sounds like sony are dwindiling bt wayside if they have to revert to copying they are also copying the wii's motion capabilities and there is a similar 'ring of light' on the ps3 controller.

OMG that is sofunny! Just proves how sad sony really are! Seriously can they not think of their own stuff for a change?
I do buy the rumor that Sony will have something in the way of points like Microsoft does with their achievement point system. I do not, however, buy the fact that they are called entitlements. That wouldn't be the correct word to use.
Unless Sony will be giving people points just for buying games and giving them "entitlement points," giving them access to downloads and free content/games when you rack up a certain amount of these points? This is all speculation on my part, but I do think that achievement system will more than likely be included in future consoles.
It might not be a selling point to some, but I really love the system and going around and getting points! :)

I knew they were gonna take it, but I'm still stuck on that name.
'Entitlements'.. It just doesn't make sense. It sounds like they're saying you can take the points if you want, not that you've achieved them. "Awards" would sound a little bit better as one of you guys already mentioned, but even that wouldn't be as natural as 'Achievements'.
You just got the 100 Kill Award!
Doesn't sound horrible, but it wouldn't work in every situation
oh yeah didnt see his gamertag

I mean first the motion sensor in the controller to imitate the Wii and now this (if it's true) can they really not think of anything themselves?

27/Jul/06, 03:58 AM
Hahahahahaha I just read an issue of PSM and even they said it's not worth the $600 till maybe a year or two later.
They also said that the motion control is nowhere near the Wii's, but it's a 'nice feature'.
And they said that the loss of vibration isn't horrible, but it takes a lot of getting used to and the controller feels empty and the games feel kind of empty as well.
Funny from a Playstation magazine

What the hell do they not have vibrations in the controller? Are they serious? Thats a cool part of games these days!
linkofhyrule
27/Jul/06, 10:52 AM
Yeah, they had a lawsuit over it and had to remove it or pay a ton of money.
Really sucks.. It didn't seem like such a big part of the games but now that they're taking it out I think it'll feel really stupid.
As my girlfriend says, you never know what you've got til' it's gone.

Yeah, especially since they spent millions making the Cell processor.

I'm not surprised Sony has stolen the idea of awarding points for playing games from Microsoft. I think Achievements were the sleeper hit feature on the 360. I love unlocking Achievements. Obviously I'm not the only one.
I think the name Entitlements does suggest a step further than just achieving points. Entitlements sounds like you can go spend the points you have earned on content. So points may "Entitle" you to download content. I think that's quite a good idea and does take a step further than the 360s system. I'm sure everyone here would like the ability to spend your points on stuff to download instead of spending real money.
However Sony have made too many bad decisions in development of the PS3, they are on risky ground. If I was a dev, I would be backing the 360.

Most dev's are, I think. XNA, no overreaching Cell, no outside-the-box control system.

No.. they're bigger duh!
Interesting theory crash, but I highly doubt they'll use them for that.

He more than likely googled it, want to comment on it and then got those responses.
The Irnoy is that if he had started a Thread he would of got comments from people saying their is already a thread about this, search in the future...lol
I don't see the problem the fact is that if Aj hadn't posted this thread could of been dead again. Also might be something to ask Mant to do, if you don't want threads dug up see if he can archive them so you can no longer comment on them.
