Ahh, I just got the red ring of death. When I saw them I thought it was the end of my 360, then I just unplugged my 360 and it booted perfectly, maybe a little really quick power surge?

Well, if it's already booting fine as it stands now, I don't think it's worth a call to MS. It's not like they'd do anything more than walk you through troubleshooting, and if it's booting fine, there's not much more trouble to shoot. And they definitely aren't gonna pay to service it if it's playing a game while he's on the phone.

Try to remember what you were doing right before the red rings, and if this happens again, see if you can notice a pattern. That way you can at least give them something to work with if you do call.

if mine went red, and then started working again, id be on the phone, at least just to let them know its been a tad dodgy, then if it balls up again like this they'll know its happened before and will do something about it (Y)

I've had loads of Red Rings and the E74 error message.....a quick power off and back on it always works again.

I'd be worried too if I had loads. Still, I don't think I'd want to sit through being on hold just so there's a record of my box having an error once, then working again.

If it became a reoccuring problem, I could just tell them that it's been a reoccuring problem the first time I call.

Well I'm not worried by it....if I send it back to MS I run the risk of getting a recon unit with a more serious issue.

If I go back to Game, so I can exchaneg for a new one, they'll test it and it'll boot 1st time, which it does the majority of the time. I think E74 is a power related error so it may be that my power brick is plugged into a 4-way mains splitter.

Have to say I would go back to the store I got it from. You hear stories, you get the signs, you get the problem. You have got the sign... I will make a bet that you get the problem.

As MJ pointed out, they'll turn it on, it'll boot fine, and they'll send him home.

Never has a store test out a faulty product and I have returned things like surround sound kits.

Me too. 3 quarters red then say bye bye cos your 360 needs replacing. Just make sure the power pack is in a well ventilated area as I think this is the source of most problems.

Yea the power brick is all i can think of really i mean in this weather too the power brick aint gonna be cold :P Im buying a mini usb fan for my 360, and just put that on thr power brick cos its too hot and i dont wanna get 3 red lights...

You should have something like a 10 - 30 day no fuss guarantee. So you could tell them you saw 3 red quadrants or you could say "I don't want it anymore".

3 is a problem aswell. Just keep an eye on it...so that it doesn't turn into 1. Then you know it's f33ked!

My second unit crashed for the first time yesterday..but i blame the heat outside. Keep it cool.

One is the serious hardware faliure.

Two is overheating.

Three is a fault (don't know what fault
but it's still classed as that serious and that you should contact M$)

Four is a cable unplugged (like av leads).

well it could of been because i was messin with the intercooler when I started it up.... lol... calm down tob3z

Is it dusty? Anywhere on the machine or near it?

Keep it extremely free of dust. Clear the machine and around it once a week. Dust is the main cause for red rings.

Also do not keep it in a room where pets might have access. Do not let them anywhere near the machine.

Air flow. Make sure it has plenty of room around it and that the air is not getting trapped around the area where the console is being used (like entertainment cabinets). Used up hot air which is expelled by the machine can get trapped in the area around the console, which then gets sucked back in and re-used again & again, this causes extreme overheating. :(

I was also told that standing your machine up vertically is better. As this increases the dissipation of heat from the console as your exposing the maximum amount of surface area.

Just tips to hopefully keep the red rings away. :)

Dude get it off the carpet!! You should never let a console live on the Carpet especially a jet enginned 360. Dust and crap are stored deep in carpet. Even if you vacumed it, it would still be there. Get it on a hard surface that you can see is clean and wipe it and the machine down once a week to catch and crap or dust.(Y)

IMO your are delaying the inevitable. Why not a get a replacment 360 now while there are no decent games out? I will be laughing if it lasts as long as when Halo 3 come out and your 360 screws up.

funnily enough, I had the 3 red lights lit up last night after a quick power surge we had... all the lights in the house quickly went off. I turned the xbox off and gave it a few minutes.. then turned it back on and worked fine.
