Take a looksie here for some nice pics of teh 360 HD-DVD add-on
http://www.planetxbox360.com/?view=article&article=1325&cat=1
Looks ok...if a little plain....could've made it a bit 'sexier'.

i saw them and thought it looked out of place a little bit, i thought they were gonna make it so it could sit on top or something.
also, side note, since its usb and you would plug it in the back, to make it look pretty, what about everyone with a wireless adapter? does it mean they all have to use the front port for one of them? or buy a usb hub? MS didnt think about how many usb's they shouldve put on the back 8-)

i bet they start putting that inside the 360s if its usb will it work on pcs
Looks nice it doesn't crash with looks that's good!

No way, there's already enough heat and cramped quarters inside the 360. But besides that, if you looked at the pics you'd see that the video output is on the add-on itself. The video doesn't go through the 360. The 360 itself just serves as the control for fast forward and next chapter.

why would it not fit and why would it be too hot? same size and 'heat spec' of a normal dvd drive if im not mistaken.
but they wont put it in, simply because i payed mt £300 and would kill them

I'm running on the assumption that hd-dvd uses more power for reading/processing.
phatmuther
11/May/06, 03:49 AM
i dont think it would, its just a different coloured laser in a hd dvd drive, thats why they're cheaper to produce than Bluray, you can change a manufacturing line from dvd output to hd dvd very very easily apparently

Well, there's also the HDCP chip.

Seems to be. That's why I'm saying the video isn't going through the 360.

Well thats good news anyway, using the 360 horsepower and HDMI output :)

11/May/06, 07:39 PM
I think the 360 will mostly handle the UI aspects, like playing nice with the remote/controller, and sends that through the USB. Which means that the add-on has the HDCP chip, so when HD DVDs start having copy protection, the player won't be out of date.

Looks more like a mini USB2 port. HDMI slots are a bit different.

What ths price range or what do you want it to be???

$100 would hurt Sony bad. $200 would still be a good price.

As long as the combined cost of a 360 & HD-DVD add-on is cheaper than a standalone HD-DVD player I'm happy...seeing as part of the deal is already paid for.
And how could people not go for it...a HD-DVD player that plays hot games on/offline at a bargain price!
Run it at a loss MS .....you know you want to!!

Yeah no what you mean MJ.
I know MS have said its not but do you think it will be compulsory to have one to play fuure games a couple of years down the line.
Blaze Lord
11/May/06, 10:03 PM
Nope. A publisher/developer would rather make a 2 disc game than one that most owners of the console couldn't play.

if your runing hd footage on a pc and we are talking hd wmvs yuo need a 2.4 gig processor minimum so you probberly need some of the power of the 360 to help it work
Blaze Lord

I'm pretty sure there's way more compression going on there compared to a video disc.

Putting a HD dvd player ina 360 would definately create more noise and possibly even make it bigger as it also needs the HDCP chip.

Microsoft, among others, has worked hard on getting a lot of resolution into a small file size. But that kind of decompression needs a lot of processing, as has been pointed out, and is more suceptible to damage on the disc. DVDs use MPEG-2, which is less efficient.

Those are labelled HD although they are generally HDTV rips.
I have downloaded full HDTV versions of movies and TV shows.
A HDTV movie is generally around 24 gig, an hour long TV show is between 5 and 8 gig. Here is an example for TV shows. As you can see File size is 5.1 gig for a 1 hour show.

960 x 560 aint really ture hi-def, but it is still amazing quality. HD starts at 1280x968 or around there, thats 720p
Blaze Lord
12/May/06, 03:23 PM
Well, bingo, you're posting about MPEG-2. Are we defining HD as just MPEG, or any type of file that has a certain amount of vertical resolution?
And 720p is not 1280x968. 720p is 1280x720. See the 720 in there?

i think youll find i said around there, not "that is the exact amount! i know everything!!! i am lord knowall!!!!!!!" ;)
Blaze Lord
12/May/06, 05:43 PM
Well, look. There's no need for approximations when the name '720p' tells you how many vertical lines there are. I'm clearing things up for other people who read this thread, and scratch their heads at a number like 968.
phatmuther
12/May/06, 05:46 PM

Blaze Lord
12/May/06, 06:16 PM
Don't go off in a huff. I'm sure there are dozens of people who read these threads without posting on them. People who are looking for answers and information. And since technical jargon can be especially confusing, I'm trying to lessen that confusion for the silent masses. There have been a lot of terms being tossed about, and I think amongst the Mbps and AC3, we can at least clarify that '720p' means 720 progressive vertical lines of resolution in the image.
This way someone reading this thread can, for example, say 'Ah, 720p is 1280x720. Of course, that makes sense. I guess that means 1080p is also 1080 vertical lines. And assuming it's the same aspect ratio as 1280x720, that works out to 1920x1080.'

He's a troublemaker this one, but I blame myself. I should have been there for him a bit more. He was stealing Captain Kirk models at the age of eight. When Blaze asked me to go attend his first Star Trek convention, I declined. Now he's a thug; selling crack to Trekkies on the suburban streets.
I guess all he wanted was my acceptance; hence the adoption of my personality traits. I accept you, son. :'(

A HD DVD add on is far better than actually releasing a new console with it built in. Loading times, seek times and noise could make a large impact if they did. This is why I also think the PS3 is stupid to have Blu Ray, a format in its first iteration. DVD has been around for many years and can be enhanced for gaming greatly now.
Also thanks for the information and pics link, created a post on blog regarding it:

Apparently I was wrong. The back is a final concept, it wasn't just an approximate looking HDMI port. Microsoft apparently doesn't want to deal with HDCP at the moment. Oy.
mjmaskrey
22/May/06, 06:47 PM
The player is going to use the existing 360 outputs so the plus side is that you can still distribute the signal and copy content if you so wish.
If they had used HDMI then I believe the kit has to be HDCP compliant at both transmitter and receiver end to display protected content? Is that right?
Must check my Sammy to see if it's HDCP compliant.
:)
Blaze Lord
22/May/06, 07:43 PM
That's correct. But having an HDCP chip at one end doesn't in and of itself make a second chip necessary. But ICT will require both chips. I think HDMI itself will work without chips at both ends, but the ICT flag requires a digital transmission and two chips.
Truth be told, it's the stupidest way to protect the media. Noone was copying DVDs by playing the movie.

ok for those not observent there is a spot on the back of the HD DVD Drive for the Wireless adapter and they are also putting more usb ports on the back of it to help out all those with multiple usb devices
