yep, you give em a deposit bout £20 or whatever, then they put your name on a list of people who will "definatly" get em launch day

He puts definitely in quotes, because all it really means is they'll do something like restrict the number on the shelves to something like 5 or 10, and not put any more out until they go through the preorder list. So if you're name isn't at the top, it isn't really a guarantee, you might have to be on the second or third shipment. Which is what happened with the 360. And so Microsoft paid for airshipping to get through preorders, instead of sticking to those huge cargo ships, and then trucks- which takes far longer.

Some stores also do a little gouging, like asking for a lot of money for preorders. Or worse, making the people picking one off the shelf buy expensive bundles.

^^^^^^^ yep, generally they say its first come first serve but with the 360 launch people at the top of lists were by-passed and all hell broke loose, people just walked in off the streets and picked one up without a pre-order, while others with 3 month old pre-orders got nothin! :|

Presumably it'll be worse for the PS3, since I'm expecting longer preorder lists and more people on line. But, maybe not by much. After all, the Xbox's makeup last gen was largely the hardcore, and those are the ones preordering before they've seen ads for it, or heading to the store at 5 am. And, of course, Sony is promising a larger build up before launch.

Yeah, I might just pre-order myself a PS3 really early on and try to guarentee one, and then hope for stuff like this, so I can sell it on eBay for thousands. :D

It won't happen with the Wii, either. Nintendo are too good for that kind of crap. :D

...If you can convince customers that the long launch lines are a result of unforeseen strong demand, you can make sure that they'll keep trying to obtain your product until it's finally on store shelves. To put it another way, long lines at launch are inevitable, especially in the games industry where customers are wont to use the presence (or lack) of a line as a measure of product quality.

here in stl, stores are putting names on a wishlist then those names are going on preorder list, and then they're (right now) limiting the preorder list to 20-50 because people were left w/o their 360's after months of waiting; they're doing this so that they'll know first how many they're getting and customers won't get upset. i'll just do what i did for the 360; take a day off work )and just go wait at walmart (only waited 8 hours inside the store and got a 360, just wasn't a premium).
