A new real-time demo of upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was released on the internet recently. The games developers opened up and explained all the newest technology that is enabled to them with the PS3's capabilities and provided many answers to unsolved questions both about MGS4 and the PS3 console itself.

The video begins with Takabe-san, the system programmer, explaining that the video they are about to show is actual video output from the devkit. The opening shot starts with Solid Snake creeping along battle torn buildings with rifle in hand and hair moving in the wind. Then the developer stops the video and begins to move the camera in real-time showing the characters stance and states that the movement in the game is very accurate. From there they talk about the sharp detail in Solid Snake's face pointing out the defined wrinkles in his face and how his hair is made up of 60,000 vertices driven by the physics engine. Also they state that his mustache alone holds more polygons than an entire character model from MGS3: Snake Eater.

Next, they begin to show the lighting in the game and how it's self-casting which means everything in the game casts its own real-time shadow and provides soft edges. Takabe-san goes on to describe the games "Depth of Field" feature which blurs things distant or in fast motion to dive depth. He states that they use HDR rendering to help the "Depth of Field" feel more accurate.

They finish showing off Solid Snake with changing lighting effects from direction to color and various filters. Then Takabe-san takes you to a different scene of the game where you get to see Otagon from a monitor on the same robot seen in the TGS MGS4 trailer. This is where things get mind blowing!

The developer states that you see Otagon is actually located in the same city you are playing in and that whatever is happening around him will show through the broadcasts on the robot. Takabe-san says that "..this Otagon is properly being rendered in real-time.." Then Shinkawa, another developer, articulates that "...it's not like a passing movie...he's there actually, he exists." Then they go on to demonstrate that they can change the lighting in the room where Otagon is located and it changes in real-time on the broadcast to Snake.

Amazingly the developers said they are still in development and its going to get much better. Hopefully we will see more at this year's E3 and get more info on the storyline and gameplay.

I think that looks better than anything the 360 has to offer. And I think that looks better than GRAW, snake was detailed as hell there...still the consoles are going to be about even. Reminds me a little bit like oblivion with the lighting around all the polygons.
