Microsoft Corp is expected to double its orders from its suppliers in Taiwan for chips to be used on its Xbox 360 game console in the second quarter to June from the first quarter, the Commercial Times reported, citing industry sources.

Microsoft is set to further consolidate its market standing at a time when Japan's Sony Corp is unlikely to launch its next-generation PS3 game console until the fourth quarter of the year, sources told the paper.

The list of Xbox 360 suppliers in Taiwan include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW), United Microelectronics Corp (2303.TW), Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc (2311.TW), Silicon Integrated Systems Corp (2363.TW) and Siliconware Precision Industries Co Ltd (2325.TW).

The sources said Microsoft is expected to deliver nearly 3 mln Xbox 360 consoles in the second quarter, doubling from the first quarter.

The first-quarter figure fell from the 1.7-1.8 mln units registered in the fourth quarter of 2005 due to a shortage of key components, they added.

Looks like MS are going all out to take up the slack which Sony has given them by launching the PS3 late.
