This fix will only work if you do it before connecting to xbox live, if your machine has already started freezing up or started hanging I am not sure if it will work or not, you can try I guess.

After receiving my 3rd 360 in a matter of days I was very reluctant to do a number of things with it for fear of breaking it again ... the main one was fight night round 3 as I had had no problems until I put this game in my machine, thinking that "surely a game couldnt wreck my box" I decided to look into other avenues of trying to stop this problem happening again, the first one was to contact MS and find out if there were any known issues with the batch of machines I had. The second was to find out about the auto updates and how they are installed, what they do etc. After a fair bit of research I dont seem to be able to find out what the upgrades are changing, what files are included etc, but I did stumble across a microsoft KB with regards to the update procedure.

The main point that caught my eye was that the updates can corrupt even though they look liike they have downloaded ok if you dont have the correct ports open on you router, and obviously a corrupt update for your 360 isnt a good thing. Didnt tell me the ports, but after a quick search online I found them, I then called MS to find out i these were correct and also to see if there was a dedicated port for supplying the updates through.

The ports required are 88 UDP, 3074 UDP, and 3074 TCP, so after setting these up on my router
specifically,I logged on and ran the update again, this time it appeared to take a lot longer than before to update, which looked promising, and i havent had any problems since, albeit I only played for one night, but I was on GRAW for about 6 or 7 hours last night without a hitch. I asked MS if I could connect without all of these ports being open and they said its possible, but it might cause strange problems.

So my conclusion is, either this has fixed my problem, and it may well fix a lot of others, the fight night round 3 disc was severly faulty *doubt it* or I struck it lucky with my 3rd console.

Anyway thought I would let all you guys know of my investigation as it was a lot of stress for me this week, trying to arrange pick up of xbox, making sure someone was at home, getting the box picked up after it was delivered, finding out they had new stock in store, visiting store on 2 seperate occasions to get machine replaced, and losing my baby that i got on release day and had worked every day since until the xbox live update/purchase of fight night round 3.

Good luck guys and let me know if this helps anyone out, would be interested to hear. If ya need any more help or info on what I have done, let me know.

Cheers..

Tony.
