After 11 years of existence as one of the most popular consoles of all time, the PSone is finally getting the kibosh from Sony. The original PlayStation, through its original and PSone iterations, has sold over 100 million units, and we're sure brought joy to millions of users worldwide, ourselves included. (Oh come on, Syphon Filter? Final Fantasy Tactics? Parappa? These are true happiness.) Of course, you'll always be able to grab a PSone on eBay if a Spyro urge hits, or just dive into your storage shed to dredge up your original PlayStation, but can we ever truly go back to those days of our youth? The good news is that Sony is working on a PSX emulator for the PSP, so hopefully we'll never be far from a little bit of (relatively) old school action.
goodbye old friend :'(

R.I.P Never liked it though and dont think it will be remembered like the M64 but another console giving us gamers more oppurtunities:)
It will be remembered more than the N64. It started the whole console gaming revolution. Even though I like the 64 more ;).

Im fed up with arguing with you but
what console brought you the first true 3D GAME...N64....
What console brought you the best game ever...N64..... I thought I was giving it a fair send off but you always question. Ah well Old dogs CANT learn new tricks.
Didnt I say that I liked the n64 more? Still the PSone will be remembered not as the better console just be remembered more 20 years from now.
BTW, I love arguing with you. :P

N64 was easily my favourite, but the PS1 has revolutionised the industry.
Games were crap in comparison to N64 stuff, though. :P

The first 3D game was 1987's Attack Animal Gakuen, if i recall correctly, which used the Famicom's 3D goggles.

Never had PS1, haha....

The only game I really liked on the original PS1 was Metal Gear Solid
Screw you guys I had a saturn.
Never had the PSone till Tekken 3 was out (which I got with it) after the saturn stopped making games, good console, got an N64 on the cheap 6 months from death which battered them but was too expensive.
All in all probably all on par with each other but this is the generation of consoles that I will remember the most.

I agree with Steve, btw. N64 was better but the PS1 started something amazing, that will never end. The gaming revolution.

Same here:D:D
But I cant remeber ANY stand out PS1 yet I can remeber at least 15 stand out N64 games. Yes the PS1 might be technically the better console but I dont think the games showed that
There were no n64 games that made me want to buy one. The PS1 is a big reason why we have our xbox 360's, our PS3's and our Revolutions. Completely changed the way gaming was IMO, especially the use of CD-ROM's over cartridges.

Perfect Dark
Zelda Majoras Mask
Zelda Ocarina of Time
Banjo Kazooie
Super Mario 64
Mario Kart
Diddy Kong Racing
GOLDENEYE
Lylat Wars
ISS 98
I could go on forever MEZ. Are you saying that not 1 of these games interested you then I think there is something wrong with you. Seriously something wrong:s
Hey, the PSone had some good games, werent the best though. GT 1 and 2, the original GTA, MGS. These games eventually became in the second generation some of the best on any console. Meanwhile games like the Zelda and Mario series have went down hill.
Die The Wind Waker DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I had a PS1 and enjoyed it a lot, can anyone explain why there's all this ass kissing towards it? How exactly did it start the 'revolution'? For me it was simply the next gen's console of choice.

you dont think it was a turning point in gaming? :brow

Explain how it was more than any other successful console was.
phatmuther
25/Mar/06, 03:26 PM
i cant do that :$
but cmon you must admit it was massive and did great things for the gaming industry, it was more popular than the 64 (not saying it was better 8-)) it bought more people to gaming, it sold a bloomin lot! good games used CDs and didnt fail, sony made it, and they wernt a gaming company, but it worked, loads of games and sequels have come from it that you probably play now, it.... it just was :@ ;)
im not saying it was the best thing ever, im just saying it did shift gaming forward, everyone had to compete against this 'new' console from 'sony' that took the world by storm, so it up'd the ante for other console makers

Use of CDs is what I was referring to.
First time a company made use of them, no?

I still don't see how any of this justifies statements like "It started the whole console gaming revolution." First of all, its use of CDs... Well, truth be told, it wasn't that new. Sega CD had already been released. The PlayStation itself was actually Nintendo's idea, but in a surprise move, Nintendo burned Sony and surprisingly announced Philips as their partner. The backlash in Japan (As Sony is a Japanese company, and Phillips isn't) spurned Sony into spitefully pushing forward with their own work.
As for not failing, its laser assembly was actually notoriously bad. The track motor would wear out over time, creating a number of issues. Longer load times and eventually being unable to play, or skipping FMVs. The latter was actually solved by turning the PS upside down, or smacking the lid. This continued with the first supply run of PS2, and its Disc Read Error.
Did it start the process of Nintendo's unseating and dethroning? Sure. Did it start a 'console gaming revolution' more than the NES? Uh. No.
Edit: As for the OP's lamenting the possibility of being far from Spyro.. Isn't the PS3 supposed to be fully back compat with PS games?

yes but the sega cd failed though, didnt it

To be extra fair, it's possible that the SNES-CD (later the PlayStation) was announced before the Sega CD was announced.

Compared to the PlayStation? Absolutely. But, as I said, I only see the PS as the fifth gen's console of choice, not something that changed the world. I really don't see how it holds a candle to the NES' influence.

The Wind Waker was a fresh outlook of Zelda games. I think its unfair to diss the WW. But the PS1 in my opinion didnt really have too many standout games but you could say the N64 had too many
It was the console that really put the gaming industry to what it is now. Before it there wasn't gaming magazines, talk shows and I dont think E3 came about until the PSone was released. The PSone was a system that also brang the shooter brand home and away from the arcade. Also the PSone built the beginnings of great PS2 games. Which games were better...the 64 or the PSone? By far the 64, but which will be remembered more down the road..you have to go with the PSone. And as for TWW...

In my eyes....the Psone did a lot of harm to the gaming industry as it opened it to masses of casual gamers who cared for little but 'sweet grafix' and 'bangin choons'...the effects are still being felt today with epic, critically acclaimed titles being overlooked by the masses in favour of 'style but no substance' games.
I did get a PS1, still have it, and some great games but I just didn't like the effect the console had on the market.

Steve, uh.. I would argue that all of these claims are wrong. Your first, the gaming magazine one, is just blatantly false, and I think everyone would agree I don't even need to bring up examples. Video game TV shows? The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Now, as for specifically talking head shows, they came about as the Nintendo generation that watched that aforementioned show grew up to the point where they would be interested in just talking heads. Not an effect of the PS's release. It's merely a matter of the post-crash gamers growing up, with the technology and market, not something that can be attributed specifically to the PlayStation. E3? The first one was right before the PS, Saturn, and (the named at-the-time) Ultra 64. And way, way before that was the CES. The separate E3 was -not- needed because of the PS. Shooter brand at home? Try Duck Hunt.

I thought the biggest innovation of that generation belonged to Nintendo with the Analog stick.
AfroJoe
26/Mar/06, 12:29 AM
Definitely, and what a perfect analogue stick it was. The Gamecube and 360 analogue sticks are good as well, but the N64 one is still the best for me.

It's far too... slippery. Not enough directional control. I always used the D-pad wherever possible, which is why I hated San Andreas at first.
Definitely right about it not being positioned on the right part of the control, though. But to be honest, it was in the right part for me as it meant I didn't have to struggle to reach the D-pad. :D
Perfect Dark -no
Zelda Majoras Mask -no

Hardly worth buying an N64 for Goldeneye.
One thing with the ps1 that you will hear being said is that it made gaming "cool" whatever that means.
Taking it mainstream possibly.
So in other words spacker retards got there hands on iss and a playstation.
Hardly cool.

I can't believe you've scored off some of the games you did.
What games made the PS1 good for you, then? Because I'm going to have a great time comparing them with the N64 titles you apparently wouldn't want to buy...
Im not a big fan of the PS2 controller actually m8. So far the 360 was the best one. IM still trying to get this through your head that becuase I defend Sony against stupid fanboyish comments doesnt mean Im a fanboy.
How the hell you dont want to be Zelda OoT. Thats just to opinionative. That game was the best game ever in most peoples opinion.
AfroJoe
27/Mar/06, 01:03 PM
Yeah, if you seriously don't like OOT, then there's a problem, because the game is probably the only game that's the best of its kind in a whole host of genres. :D
I can't believe you've scored off some of the games you did.

I was trying to remember myself and I can't even think quite honestly. Games like Zelda I just couldn't get into, was the same with the Zelda for the Gamecube. My favourtie Zelda was the one for the gameboy, that was a hell of a lot of fun.
I still had my NES for Mario Kart and Super Mario, Mario 64 I have for my DS, it's a great game, but at the time it wasn't something that topped my agenda.
Diddy Kong racing is surly just a spin off of Mario Kart. I didn't like Lylat Wars, not a fan of flying on tracks games.
ISS 98 was no where near the game Evolution Soccer for the PS1 was. ISS 98 was so arcadey and I really didn't enjoy it. Evolution Soccer was the ----.
Thought of a few games for the PS1:
Medal of Honor
Finaly Fantasy VII
Syphon Filter
Silent Hill
Resident Evil 1,2,3
Driver
Gran Turismo 2
Tony Hawks Pro Skater
Metal Gear Solid
Pretty sure none of them were on the N64 and all appeal to me far more. Only game which owned the PS1 every year were the wrestling games. The N64 wrestling games were so much more fun than Warzone and Attitude.
AfroJoe
27/Mar/06, 01:21 PM
Resident Evil 2 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater were both of N64, and were both excellent games. Comparable with the PS1 versions? I don't know. But definitely damn good anyway.
As for the other games you mentioned, well, I suppose it does come down to personal opinion. I'd take a fun racing game like Mario Kart 64 or F-Zero X over Gran Turismo 2 any day. Gran Turismo games bore me to hell, as they're just driving around the same tracks over, and over, and over, and over, against rubbish AI opponents. Sure, it looks nice, but I just can't understand why it doesn't bore everyone to death after a while.
The others are all PS1 exclusives, yes, but I'd easily take Goldeneye and Perfect Dark over any of the shooters you mentioned, if only for their superb multiplayer longevity.
MGS and FF7 are incomparable to anything on the N64, and I can definitely see why people like them so much, but I'm not too bothered about them really, as stealth games and RPGs just aren't my cup of tea.
And about ISS98... yes, it is a very arcadey game, but I still really love it. Apart from the more recent PES titles, it's probably my favourite football game ever, and I totally mastered it.
And yes, WWF No Mercy is the greatest wrestling game ever.
Still can't believe you don't like Ocarina of Time... :(
I wouldn't say I dislike it, I just never really got into it so I probably didn't give it a fair crack of the whip.
