In an unfortunate turn of events for the legions of Australian video game fans, Sony's president of the Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios division Phil Harrison announced today that the upcoming PlayStation 3 controller will be unable to pull double duty as a precision kangaroo killer. Apparently the boomerang/banana shape that we've come to hate despise detest accept as the PS3's major drawback is being "tossed" in favor of an unspecified redesign (NOT the one pictured here) that will be unveiled at E3 in May, mentioned Harrison in a speech that was mainly about the Xbox Live-like PlayStation Network Platform. There's a lot of pressure on Sony here to unveil something appealing for several reasons: they need to placate the vocal minority of ravenous fanboys who publicly slammed the initial design

I'm not surprised they went for a new design with all of the bashing that came with the "boomerang". Though I wonder if they are now thinking of moving the left analogue where the d-pad is like the 360. Guess we'll have to wait until E3 unless some inside pics get released much like it did with the 360's controller.

Great news, the controller that I have seen looks ugly and could look so much better. (Y)

I'm not too bothered, to be honest, because I don't plan to actually get a PS3 anyway.

It is interesting that they've chosen to listen to the fans on this one, though. I'm quite surprised, in fact. Most companies just tend to assume they can make people like things, but in a way it's good to see Sony trying something different now that they've found opposition to one of their products.

So, yeah, well done. I still hate them, though. :D

Thought they would. It was a mess originally. SONY seem to be plucking their ideas up now,
