It was today announced by mercurynews.com that Microsoft are working on a handheld version of an Xbox, which will directly "battle" with the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS in the hand-held market.

If you havent read the article it's here (http://www.360monster.com/newspost.php?id=0000000535#comment).

I think it's going to be hard for Microsoft to fit in. Well it all depends on games. Sony (PSP) didnt start out with good games, maybe Microsoft can make it opposite. What do you think?

im not a fan of these handheld consoles, never have been, i think microsoft could make a decent stand in the market but not knock off the other compotition, i dont think they could get through to the japanese, they dont seem to like MS products and generally dont take to them

Yeah, if they want to get in to portable gameing device market and not be last, they really need to gain trust and likeness from Japanese gamers. They don't seem to be liked right now, if you check the 360 sales in Japan. So I don't think anything else will get better. Maybe....

I'm not too fussed on the idea tbh, I'd prefer if MS just focused on the console system wars, as it's going to be hard enough to win this generation even with full attention on the console. We all know that Nintendo are the rulers of the handheld market as it's more focused on the younger people that play games, MS seems to be more mature so it may not appeal to everyone. It will be interesting to see how powerful it is though and the nifty things it could do. It'll probably interact with the 360 in some way too, like the PSP is supposed to be able to with the PS3.

BTW Sharpplayer, I like your post count. ;)

i think it would be quite cool, but equaly could be just a pmp with gaming functions, or end up like the gizmondo, or even be running windows!
but they wont get a big market share, nintendo are too good at what they do.

i like the idea of a handheld xbox , although whenever i play a psp i get bored after 10 mins, so it might be the same way with a xbox handheld, but as fleeboi said it would be good to see how powerfull it would be.

If the picture I have seen of this portal console is legit and not fake then wow. It really does look wonderful, taking the 360 controller and splitting it apart to fit in a screen. Good work Microsoft. (Y)

its not real unfortunatly, it was a mock up done a while back when the rumours first started.

More news on this front:

"we will provide development services of approximately thirty Transmeta engineers to Microsoft relating to a proprietary Microsoft project. These services agreements contain related fixed-fee and technical milestones provisions,"

Quoted from a report a low-power CPU company needed to give the SEC. Microsoft quickly responded in filing a request to allow Transmeta to keep secret about their project. The report also mentions working for Sony.

I'd buy it if it was a multimeda type device and could dock with my 360 to download online content..............and stuff!

Imagine porting your arcade games to your XP ( Xbox Portable ), that would be sweet.

I'm sorry to say for all of you that own PSP's, Nintendo owns the portable market. They always have, they always will. PSP is neat and all, but where are the games? If there is one thing Nintendo knows how to do, it's making kick-ass games.

They always have, they always will.

The only thing that you can be sure of when speaking about the video game industry is, that nobody always has, and nobody always will.

I know alot of older gamers who play XBOXLIVE, that do not normally play handhelds who would lay down $$ for a Microsoft XP................that is if there was still a "Live" element to the device.

Alright, well there has been a trend with the console industry.

It went something like Nintendo... Sega... Nintendo, then all the sudden Sony flips everything around and up until now Sony has had the market tied down, now Microsoft has beat them to the punch, and unless they get their act together soon Microsoft is going to be the leader of the current generation.

But throughout the years the handheld industry has overall been lead by Nintendo, starting with the first Gameboy. Of course there are people willing to shell out money for a system by Microsoft, just like there are people willing to spend for a PSP, but overall people want a handheld system by Nintendo, it's their last stronghold, and they have it in a headlock.

I think that's a fair assumption. Nintendo's basically rocked the handhelds. You could say the Gameboy was the most successful platform ever. But you would have to adjust for market growth and things. But, even without that, the fact that the Gameboy could beat out GameGear and Lynx is amazing, and speaks volumes to Nintendo's stranglehold on portable gaming.

Ya, Nintendo is the undisputed heavy weight in handhelds. I think no matter how The Revolution turns out, Nintendo will be OK in the industry as long as they stay ahead of the curve in Handhelds. Plus they have the Jap market, which has never embrased anything Microsoft.
