"The veil of mystery surrounding the PS3 is downright maddening, and a little worrying. Consider that by March 2000, the company had already set the PlayStation 2's October 26th release date in stone. Yet here in March 2006, Sony has only been willing to commit to a "spring 2006" launch for its latest console. Less than ten days from winter's end and gamers are left scraping together scraps of conflicting information trickling from the company's various divisions to try and get a sense of the bigger picture. Sure, it's worth the proverbial 1000 words, but they tend to be ones like unclear, uncertain, vague, contradictory, and unlikely."

"......Not to mention the fact that for all of the 360's sometimes eerie similarities to Dreamcast, Microsoft today is in a vastly stronger position than Sega was six years ago. Where Dreamcast was the last gasp of a foundering hardware maker, 360 is the second generation of a carefully-planned effort by
one of the world's most successful technology corporations. The original Xbox established itself as a strong brand, giving its successor an eager fanbase to build on -- a far cry from Sega's desperate drive to win back gamers alienated by the horribly mishandled 32X and Saturn."

Comment: For me it's not a suprise that Sony is digging a hole big enough to fall in and not climb back up. The thing is that they can see the hole, and avoid the fall, but for right now it looks like Sony is blind. Sure, we only know few details on what Sony is planning but come'n on some stuff that is coming out of their mouths is just.......BS.......Take a look at possible PS3 game screens (Do note that these have yet to be confirmed Playstation 3 screenshots) :

(These images originally posted at the GameRevolution website (and now currently removed) are said to be actual in-game screenshots of the Playstation 3 version of Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom. But what has message boards in an uproar is well... the quality of the graphics of the game.)

GFX dont look anything great. PS3 may outsell the 360, especially in Japan but I dont think it can do anything that a 360 cant.

It will also be hard for them to come up with an Xbox Live killer.

Its no so much about graphics as they will be similar in that respect, its more about winning hearts and minds and these days the number one factor is cost.

Sony=Harware vs Dreamcast=Software + Dreamarena
Sony=Hardware vs Microsoft=Software + XBL

Its a different era now, Microsoft are no Sega. I don't think Sony are so arrogant that
they believe there is no contest, they are in trouble, I see it as possibly too much of a gamble to have put their console in the lap of new technolgy, the lets get a playstation coz its also a blu-ray player is not going to work this time.

Its going to be an interesting year.

That makes a lot of sense, Revolution would be different enough to buy, PS3 will probably not have enough pulling power for me either.

From Team Xbox:

We have been trying to find out more on PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Network Platform since Wednesday’s announcements, after the translation of Kutaragi’s words sounded a little odd to us.

First, the confirmation that every PlayStation 3 game requires a hard drive and the comments by Kutaragi that the HDD might not be included with every console were a contradiction so we checked with a few sources in the U.S. and Europe and we can now confirm that the PlayStation 3 will include a 60GB hard drive right out of the box. In addition, there will be bigger hard drives available for users to purchase.

Second, regarding the PlayStation Network Platform, we learned that the basic service will be free and include online gameplay, at least at launch; only specific titles like MMO games and premium services like online storage will require an additional fee.

We also learned that the PNP will only support online play for PS3 and PSP titles at launch and in the subsequent months it will add support for PS2 titles.

Now, all these announcements have some interesting consequences. Microsoft has a one year advantage over Sony, which could allow the software giant to gain a big chunk of market share, but at the same time, coming late to the party allows Sony (just like Microsoft did with the Xbox to compete with the PS2) to build a more powerful machine and set a strategy that is based on its competitor’s mistakes.

:)
