So I have always had my eye on a macbook since I had some hands on time back in 2006.
I am heading to Uni and was thinking of having one for some media editing and general writing. My desktop will be for gaming.
What do people think of macbooks? I know they are overpriced but in general thoughts please.

I think you should wait until you can get into your Uni's library and use the comps in there to order it since you will get it with H.E discount (not students which is a little less) and a 3 year warranty (not Applecare though, but I'm not sure on that one).
Macbooks are ok, but I just dont like such small screens personally. I used to have a 14" iBook and that was ok but not the best, upgraded to a G5 tower and still running it now 4 years later. Solid hardware in the desktop, ----e with the laptop though, thank god I got Applecare for it since it had about £5000 worth of repairs on it over 2 years.
EDITIO: Alum Macbook
Standard - £929.00
Student - £872.85
H.E - - - £799.25
Ill have a look for the warranty thing.

I'm a Mac fanboy, so be warned.
The latest MacBooks are really really nice. Light, solid, great using the trackpad with multi-fingered gestures. A real pleasure. No firewire connection anymore though, so if you have a firewire camcorder or external hard drive then you're shafted.
If you can afford it, get one, but like phatmuther says - don't forget Apple Care. You can sometimes get Apple Care cheaper on Amazon or ebay. Another thing worth looking at are the Apple Refurbs, although I'm not sure if your educational discount is better.
