Throw a party or take them out somewhere on you
Have that last real good time with them so they don't forget you quickly

Just make sure you spend some quality time with them, do something you both enjoy. With the advent of skype and other internet sites I am sure you will still be able to keep in touch cheaply. Airfares are cheap as well so make plans to at least visit once they are settled.

Exactly that!

I remember when I was leaving to go live in Japan and friends I had at the time would not be there when I returned (Uni etc). So it was a proper farewell for us all. People who I'd been with for 3 years solid (one for 9 years).

We got really drunk, had an amazing BBQ and just took loads of photos. The photos bit is key. Next day they posted through a huge photo album with pictures from the night and before. It's a really nice gift to take away with you.

I'd recommend doing a party a couple of days before they leave, so you can organise a present like that :-)

At the party, you gotta make some kinda carriable chair and then when you're all wasted parade them down the street singing "for he's a jolly good fellow" as loud as you can.

Then video it so we can all get the lulz.

when i left england, i had a party in a field. All my good mates stayed and braved the rain with me, and the people who were ---- left.
field party it is.
either way there's no "best way" it's gonna be a miserable time for you and him/her.

good luck.
