Internet...

Well as we all know, Internet is pretty much on the up recently in comparison to most things.
...But with such good things are always problems. Personally im experiencing some devastating lag recently online, and for downloads. So i thought i'd go have a speedtest whilst on LAPTOP (wireless; which i know slows internet somewhat) and whilst on Xbox, not downloading, just on Dashboard.
And here were my results:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/412015284.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Which is pretty average i suppose, and id suspect my Ping to be around 40, if im going through wired Internet on the laptop, or just on xbox which is also wired.

So then im downloading some updates for the LOTRO Trial, and it occurs to me, that im capping at 220KBps, on download, and its like that through torrents or just general downloads also.

Then it occurs to me; WHY dont i download at anything above that, or even so; NEAR my 1900 odd download speed?

------
Also, on a side note, everyone go on Speedtest (WWW.SPEEDTEST.NET) and link your results here. (IMG tags)

And i also did this 'Glasnost' test to see if your ISP interferes with your downloads, or manipulates your connection and mine dosen't; and on there the download in a torrent test was like 500KBps :?
Heres a link to the test if you want to do it; Scroll down:

There are many reasons why you dont download at the max bandwidth available to you. The main one will be that not every site has the ability to offer you downloads at your max speed. Some will give you the full whack but others will cap it to 100kbs or less.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/402226700.png

Here is mine, i can max out my bandwidth downloading from Newsgroups and can get upto 700k a sec depending on time of day.

With the pic above I would get a max of 520k a sec and upload of 120k a sec.

Which is more than enough for most things including browsing and running two 360's online at the same time.

A remember there is huge difference between Kilobits (http://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/) and Kilobytes.

Much better than me.

1.5mb down, 700kbs up. CBF to go to Speedtest to have it confirm it, I just know it is that.

You are downloading at your max speed. The 1976 doesnt represent the download speed you can get, It represents your connection speed. Your at 2mb which tops out around 190-220ks/s

Remember when everywhere had 512kb/s broadband? Max download speed was 50kb/s ish. Basically just take the last digit off for a rough download speed.

Not too shabby. Hi ping though for the speed - hmm.

It really depends on the server your grabbing files from, the bandwidth speed they have and the load on them from other users too. I doubt I ever max out my connection over Live or PSN when downloading content from them, especially at busy times when a decent piece of content is release, which has been pretty rare recently.

Just need someone from Korea to blow all us brits/euros away with their 100Mb speeds. *sigh*

Pretty damn good for only £10 a month unlimited usage, no throttling or capping etc. Can usually squeeze a bit more out of it too...upto 14mb down.

Pretty happy with that, it's not the best but then we cannot get Cable (it's North Wales, FFS, I'm just pleased I can get broadband!) ;)

It's been much worse but it supports 3 360's on xbox live with ease. Tried that theory out on the weekend with no problems.

Well at least it's better than that time you only had dial up like speeds.

Suck my upstream -----es, I win :)

In reality my downstream is at around 1.8 MBps which is 1800KBPS on the speedtest scale, I can alter my Signal to Noise ratios to get 2.4 MBps but with it at that I lose a bit of Upstream. And for games, it's the upstream that counts, so that's how I have it set right now :) If I didn't use XBL much, I'd have it set to download and would get 2600kbps - around 2.4MBps and about 1500kbps Upstream :D

I'd say I get host on Halo even with a 50% American party around 70% of the time :) For some reason my ping is bad? No idea why, that's bull----, lol :p

EDIT)- I might play around with my router settings and see what results I get :p

Oh just checked, and apparantly my ISP has been having problems with ICMP (Ping) so that's why my ping is 80+ :p

Mine used to be around the 180 kb/s mark before even under a 100 kb/s so it was even worse but lately my speeds have improved a lot. A quick phone call to my "chums" at BT and all is normal again.

Dunno what the packages are in the UK, but don't forget that if you are getting phone + TV + Internet through the same pipe, that there are certain bandwidth limits set aside for the phone and TV. Here in France, the TV takes priority for my ISP. I always get better network connectivity when the TV is off.

Not sure if this is quantifiable or not, but it seems to me that if you have a decent connection to a game in XBL, you are slowed down to the slowest connection. E.g. if I have 4 green bars and somebody else has 2 yellow bars, then all players will be slowed down to 2 yellow bars. I tend to get better results when I don't have the best network conection to a game, otherwise I just see people skating across the screen.

Old ISP BT (above) new ISP Sky (below).

[/URL][URL="http://www.speedtest.net"]http://www.speedtest.net/result/459084918.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

This was done on a wireless network (I know I should test it with the wired connection for the best result)

How the distance is different on the both of them I have no clue but I'm happy to be back online and I have better speeds for less money as well. I never have to speak to BT ever again (cue manic laughter).

EDIT - 17th May

Just thought I'd test it out again but on the pc this time. It's getting better.

So far the difference in ISP's is astonishing. BT are abysmal in comparison to Sky so far so good :).
