Chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, Kazuo Hirai (pictured), told Official Playstation Magazine that the Xbox 360 'lacks longevity' and commented on the future of the competition between Xbox 360 and PS3:

'Last time I checked, they've never had a console that's been on the market for more than four or five years and we've committed to a ten year life cycle, so you do the math.'

Hirai's fighting talk - pressing the advantage or defending his corner?

Coming from the usually confident and convincing camp at Sony, Hirai's words don't seem out of place, but taking a look at the recent sales figures over the Christmas period, we are forced to wonder whether his comments are not just an attempt to reassure execs and Playstation owners about the success of the console.

These sales figures, which show a definite sloping of the Playstation 3's commercial success, show the Sony machine having sold 19% less units in December 2008 as compared with the previous December. Conversely, the Xbox 360's sales have risen by 8% in the same comparison.

What does this mean for Sony and the Playstation 3? And what was the true purpose of Hirai's bold statements? To be sure, we will have to wait and see.

Sony are still screwed. PS3 has a 10 year lifespan, so the "PS4" wouldn't come out until 2016? 360 has a 5 year lifespan? new one comes out 2010. What are people going to buy. Yes, the brand new console, not the old PS3 thats been out for 4/5 years. At this point sony will think 'oh ----' and rush out the PS4 a year later.

Great master plan.

The 360 has got a lot of years left in it. With this new generation of internet based consoles, updates to games, and the console itself are easily accessible. And also new technology of downloading a full retail game straight to your console is not a pipe dream anymore but a reality. The PS3 and 360 will be around for a long time yet with these capabilities.

The console may last 10 years but I doubt the bluray drive will last 5. All the people that I know that have had problems with the PS3 have all had problems with the Bluray drive.

I doubt we will see any new console from any manufacturer before Xmas 2011.

Yeah that would be great. They havent really been doing anything in the arcade hardware front so I doubt that they will ever enter the console marketplace again unless all the manufacturers get together and invest in a single platform

Still rumours that Apple may be about to enter the console market though.

Would be the worst idea ever. But then again same was said about Microsoft. But still, the console market is over saturated as it is.

'Last time I checked, they've never had a console that's been on the market for more than four or five years.'

I can do the same thing he did...

"Last time I checked, PS3 was doing ----."

Just another blatant promo speech from a desperate CEO.
