Sup guys, I HAVE MONEY  yes yesssss. . .

I'm looking to burn around 180 - 250 on a 5.1 surround sound system but i'm not really sure what to get. Only specifications are that it needs optical in for my Xbox 360 :) I've been looking at this: Samsung HT-TZ215R 800 Watt (http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/-/281/363/-/5320461/Samsung-HT-TZ215R-800-Watt-5-1-Channel-Home-Cinema-System-With-Tallboy-Speakers/Product.html?searchtype=genre)

Anyone have a decent 5.1 setup they can review for me, anyone know much about this kinda ----? Any help will be appreciated. I've been looking about and have heard that Sony 5.1 systems are a bit ---- due to the fact they just ramp their ---- up so it looks better on paper and they use cheap transistors and part etc. . . They apparently sound decent when playing loud sounds but when playing anything quiet or low end the quality is bad (No Idea why)?! So preferably nothing Sony :p

All help appreciated, even if you come in juts to Defaecate on the thread :D

I have a Samsung 7.1 amp with Yamaha speakers. The sound quality is fantastic via the optical connection. I bought the amp and speakers seperately as the ones you normally get in a full package arent really that great.

I got the Amp online and bought my speakers from Richer Sounds. Full lot including an active sub woofer and all other speakers was under £200.

If I was going to buy the packages Separately what would I have to look for?

1 x A/V reciever
1 x Front speaker
1 x Sub
4 x Floor standers/bookshelf speaker

After I add it all up it starts to look extremely expensive :F

Seeing as I have no idea what I'm looking for I think I'll have to have a chat with one of my mates who used to work at richer sounds, lol :p

Decisions, Decisions :/

If you dont want to go down the seperates route you might want to check THIS (http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1112084/art/sony/ht-ddwg700-home-cinema-sy.html) out.

Gets very decent reviews and if your only going to use it for the 360 and the occasional movie then there is really no need to shell out £££'s on one.

Looks nice :)

I'll be using it for music, movies, TV and 360. Although everything and anything I watch is usually ripped and then downloaded so it doesn't really keep it's true 5.1 dolby'ness :p

Hmmm IDK I just wanted a decent sounding system because my computers 2.1 setup is ---- now and the bass sounds like crap plus the sound quality from any LCD Television in general usually sucks and it's always pissed me off :/

I'll do some more snooping about anyway :)

Cheers Bingo :D

I have an LG 5.1 surround set up and I don't use optical I just use a switchable scart so that everything that is played through the HDtv comes through my set up. It sounds decent enough to me as well and goes down a storm come Singstar/Rockband night :). Also it really helps the set up if you've put the speakers in the desired locations correctly. Have a look at the link below.

An Essential Guide to Home Theater Speaker Placement (http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/34579/129023.html)

A 5.1 surround set up is all you need really. I'd personally say a 7.1 set up for a normal size room would be a bit too much and needless. Good luck in finding one though (Y).

Hmmmm, I've been looking about and tbh I'm not sure If I need 5.1, all my movies and tv shows are *cough* ripped, therefore lose the dolby 5.1. The only thing i'd use the 5.1 for is for games, and really, I only play halo :p haha. . .

I'm thinking of getting a Kick ass Stereo system instead now, for use with Music, TV, Movies and games.

I'm wavering onto buying a decent Stereo AMP:
Cambridge Audio A5 (http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=CAMB-A5BLK)

and a decent set of floor standers with some deep Bass capabilities so no need for Sub:

Tannoy Mercury F4 Customs (http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/3967)

When I get some more moneys I can buy a good 5.1 AMP and add an extra 2 floor standers/Book shelvers, a Centre speaker and a sub :) It'll make for a kick ass system in the long term and a ----ing good stereo system for now :p
My mates also going to do the same, so we're hoping on going into richer sounds or somewhere and striking up a deal with em by saying yep we're both gonna spend 250 quid or so each we want some bloody good deals for both of our custom :D

What you guys think?

If you just need 2.1 sound then I can recommend the JVC NX-PS3

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31WiISBi2nL._SS400_.jpg

I have it hooked up in the games room and the sound is awesome. Really deep bass, inputs are limited but I just have the 360 hooked up to it. I got it for a bargain £39.99.

I'm hearing great things about these Tannoy F4s'

http://www.superfi.co.uk/images/main/tannoy-mercury-f4-custom-dk-oak-pair.jpg

Cost around 160gbp plus and amp for around 80 - 120

They look sexy too :) My mate from richer sounds said they sound amazing as well :D
I think I've found a WINRARRR :P

Cant go wrong with Tannoy gear, good choice. My CD Decks and Mixer are hooked up to a kick as set of Jamo R909 speakers, they things churn out the bass like nothing else.

I'm not quite as rich as you *envy* grrrrr, haha :p

Now I want:

Yamaha RXN600D (http://www.richersounds.com/showbigproductpicture.php?cda=showbigproductpictur e&pid=YAMA-RXN600DT&fname=small_304244.jpg)
2 x Tannoy F4s'
2 x Tannoy F1s'
1 x Centre speaker, not sure what though
and a nice stand to put my A/V reciever, TV and xbox on :)

Only problem is, all in all it'll cost 520 quid and I'm only willing to spend 300 :(

Probably just gonna get the 2 F4s and a cheap stereo amp :D

If I just buy a Home Cinema system, I only want my TV and 360 plugged in. Do all the wires come with it to do that?

bingo83
28/Dec/08, 01:28 AM
Depends on how you connect at the moment. I have VGA cables on all my 360's they have the Red and White stereo cables attached but also have the Optical breakout box at the base of the connection, I use the optical to connect to the 7.1 amp downstairs and the stereo plugs into the JVC hifi upstairs.

Snowy M1nge

Also depends if you get an all in 1 system or buy the amps and speakers separately.

With the all in 1 systems you'll most likely get all you need bar an optical lead or 2 :p

If you buy it all separately then you'll be looking at buying Wiring, banana plugs optical leads etc etc. . And that's the fun :p

Oh And I just got another 300 quid from my parents so it looks like I may be getting this:

or this:

I like the looks of the Onkyo though :p

So up to now 2 x Tannoy F4s' and an Onkyo TXSR506 :D Hunt is going well :D

Defo go with Onkyo superb systems, you should go to richer sounds and get them to set it up for you :) That way you can hear it before you buy.

Right, I bought my 5.1 system.

Set it up, works a treat for when I play DVDs and CDs through my DVD player.

Magic.

Now, I have no idea how to get it setup with my 360. I just have my 360 setup normally, with the cables that came with it, I just launch them into the back of my TV. If that helps? How do I get my 360 using all the speakers and that?

Cheers

Do I just buy one of those Official VGA things? Will that work? I thought they were just for picture and not sound? Do I need to buy anymore wires ontop of the VGA thing?

There's an optical output on your xbox somewhere, mines on my component cable at the base end:

your amp/av reciever should have an optical in on it, just get a lead to connect them :)

Aha, the whole thing is being warmed by the radiator...

Thats the Xbox, already known to be prone to overheating.

You are brave, I salute you kind sir.

Radiator hasn't worked in the 2 years i've lived in the house ;) And the xbox has been going strong since launch :D

I've had a proud 8.

And I just realised that mines next to a radiator, along with the projector which is kicking out a fair bit of heat.
