original xbox games on the 360?

yes i know the xbox 360 is backwards compatible but im curious about the 360 arcade which is the one i bought. i checked ms site and it says the arcade is NOT capable to play original xbox games. HOWEVER checking online and ive found some conflicting information. i found some sites saying that once you get a hard drive for the arcade then it will work and ive found other sites saying its not possible at all. does anyone have a arcade 360 and know for sure first hand if it will play original xbox games? i want to be able to play halo 1 and 2 and fable or w/e else catches my eye.

the reason the arcade system is listed as not being backward compatible, is because it doesnt have a harddrive, and a harddrive is required to play old xbox games. Its as simple as that.

i used to own the 'core' console, wich is basicly the arcade thing without the arcade games preinstalled, and i played a few old xbox games, so trust me on this one. They have the same hardware, other then the fact the harddrive is missing on the arcade version.
