No, if they take the Hard Drive aswell and swap it or whatever, you'll lose your 360 account with the gamerscore you have. Unless they give you the same one back (probably), you'll have it all the same.

If you have xbox live then you can just recover your gamertag with gamerscore on your new xbox. But you will lose all of your game saves.

It's not unreasonable to ask the shop if you can keep your harddrive...although if you're exchanging you may get a 60gb drive. If that's the case buy a memory card first and transfer your most important saves to it.

If you ring Microsoft and tell them your situation they shall send you a cable free of charge to transfer all data from one hard drive to another. Your Gamerscore, Game Saves etc. shall all be transferred without trouble and it should work really easily. Alternatively try searching eBay for one of the cables, although getting a free one from Microsoft would be your best bet.

Microsoft has actually requests that stores don't switch hard drives over because of the data problem they have. The console ID does not match the console id matches to the gamer tag & HD id so any download content you have (ie arcade games) won't run as it will think your doing something cheeky. Then you have to do a content license transfer.

I hope you deleted your gamertag off your old hard drive before you took it back to the shop.

Well for all the times my xbox has been sent off.
MANY, MANY times.
I am happy to say that the turnaround was never very long, just over two weeks maximum.
And you don't have to send your HDD, so you'll be fine there.
Next step. Get LIVE :P

Once you experience live, you will wonder how you played xbox without it.

How people can play 360's without LIVE is beyond me.

Did you give address or email?

With either, they will send you some UPS labels. You cut out the label, and stick it on the box (not xbox box; plain box) containing xbox. Then call UPS, and ask them to collect the package. Simple as.
