New PS3 themes ... at a price

Looks like Sony and their partners have created a line of premium Themes and Wallpapers for the PS3, however these will now have to be purchased.

We have linked up with a few partners, Smobile & Disruptive Media Publishers, to distribute premium themes from PlayStation Network. They have content offerings that range in type from NCAA College licenses to beauties on the beach to original cartoons and anime. These themes were created specifically for the PS3 and have special backgrounds, XMB icons and, in some cases, sounds. Here is a sample of some of the new Themes:

We have created a new “Premium Themes” section under Themes & Wallpapers for you to easily access this content. Also, for each theme, there is preview option that allows you to view images of the theme prior to making your decision.

We plan to offer approximately 6-10 new “Premium Themes” a month. So be sure to check back often to browse the newest in premium theme content.

Seems they now think there is money to be made from these now. Will the free stuff now dry up over the coming months when the devs can now charge for the previously free items?

I like the look of the Bioshock one, shame the game is getting slaughtered on the PS3 for dodgy textures and framerate.

Still sticking with my Eden theme. I wouldn't even consider buying any themes for either console. Even with the bioshock one, its icons do not mean anything, and they could have used some nice 50's theme objects for the items, not pics of characters. As for the second one, no words really, that's just awful!

With user created themes around now I think they rolled this out a little too late IMO.

i actully like the standard theme with the colored background changing so i left that on these do look good do they get custom sound effects as well as the icons. however money for a theme isnt going to happen its only cosmetic.

They are nuts if they think they are going to make much money with this.

To buy premium themes you need access to the internet.
Anyone with internet access can download the exact them for absolutley free.

Sony's given everyone the ability to make their own themes including icons and sounds, so as soon as a theme is released it can be duplicated very easily and then made available to everyone for free.

When I first saw the topic tite I was thinking "animated icons/bg's", but that doesn't seem to be the case.
