View Full Version : 360 finally shown me red

After two years and three months my 360 has decided to bite the dust and show me the 3 flashing red lights. Looking around I guess that means its a hardware failure? (All red flashing segments apart from the top right one).

Has anyone recovered from one of these or am I just being hopeful that there is any chance of recovering from this red ringer? Should I just save the bother and just get the repair ball rolling.

Also after 2yrs I guess I'll have to pay for this repair? no extended warranty was taken out at the time.

Any knowledgeable folk out there that has been through this with an old box past a year would be good to hear.

EDIT: wiki says MS extended the warranty to 3years to cover this, I remember reading about this a while back.

Its now 3 years warranty ant for RROD (Y)

Just phone them up, they'll give you shipping label, then you hone UPS, they uplift.

3/4 weeks later, your 360 is fixed and you have a month free Xbox LIVE :p

EDIT: thats what hapened to me anyway. I got my Xbox on release day.

Unlucky hope you get it sorted soon. MS Customer Services can be dreadful if you get johnny foreigner who is reading from a script though.

Thanks to Wriggy's tip I did the towel trick on it and its working now, even from cold, booted it up this morning and it was still OK. :s

How long it will last I don't know.

Some say it can last for a few hours, others have stated that it can last a few months.

So your'd be lucky if it lasts a long time more.

Microsoft's helpdesk is great compaired to EA's helpdesk. I called them once to get help with getting my Army of two to work online, and when the webpage the helpdesk guy pointed me to didnt work, he just hung up on me.

I'm tempted to send mine back after completeing GTA IV just as a precaution. My three years will be up when the 3rd anniversary of the launch comes, so I might just claim it red ringed and hopefully get a console with HDMI port on it. I already had the problem a few months after launch and my console is still a 2005 version, so I think it could give up anytime soon!

Mine gave me three red lights yesterday. Then when i rang xbox support it changed to one red light. I told them it was three red lights so they would take it under warranty (had it 14 months).

Lukily i have my brothers console in the house and he's not back until August, so i'm not without a console while mine is fixed.

Annoying though

I've had the RROD a few times now.. I've always just taken the console back to Currys (shop I bought it from) and they've replaced it there and then with a brand spanking new one.

My mate done the same thing but in Game.. I dunno why everyone sends them back to MS, then have to go without a console for a month, and get a repaired one back.. When you can just take it to the shop you got it from like I did.

I didn't buy any extra warrantys or anything either

After exactly 7 days of shipping it off my 360 is back with a Motherboard change and a measly 1months worth of LIVE, gee thanks! :)

Not a bad service overall I think, I had no email correspondence during the whole deal which was a little shocking, I had to keep checking the support site to find out what's going, they even reset my account on there, luckily I had my consoles Serial entry still in Firefox so I could re-add it.

Started off thinking the console was quieter than normal but after an hours play its come back to its turbine/tornado self, bless.

Well, over 3 months and my repaired 360 has gone again. This time lower right - E71 hardware failure and can't get past the xbox startup animation without it failing all the time.

So... I go to the xbox site to start the repair ball rolling to find my warranty has ran out - WTF!! :| I thought they extend it for a year!? It tells me it ran out 1 month after my repair so I am looking at £53.99 for repair. Damn!

Now the decision of whether to put that money into a new one or risk it again. What's the chances of a new one coming back rather than my current one with a band aid over it?

Edit: Found this on Xbox FAQ...

Q: How does this warranty differ from your existing warranty?
A: Currently, any Xbox 360 is covered by a one year manufacturer’s warranty (two years in some parts of the world). If the console is out of warranty, there is a charge to have it repaired. It then comes with an additional one year repair warranty. With these changes, there is effectively a three year warranty with no charge for repair for general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights error code which displays on the console.

Need to call them I guess :s

I say get a new one, you are almost guaranteed to get a refurbished one that will fail on you in a year. So get the newest addition with the small chips or whatever it is that they improve over the years.

That all depends how you are doing financially, obviously, if you are tight on cash and you are an addict who can't go a month or two without gaming, then repair, if you can put off the need to game, then just save up.

I've got a red ringing 360 hanging around at the moment, my brother's old one, been meaning to get it sent off to MS, around 2 years old. Will it be covered under the new warrenty?

After some time with the Indian call centre, turns out the 1yr repair warranty on their FAQ is ONLY if you've paid for a repair :/ The free 3 red ring repair doesn't qualify apparently.

Grrr!

Thats bull----. Call again, tell them your console always gives you red lights, and that you KNOW there is an 'infinite' warranty on RROD. Tell him/her you want to speak to their manager, and if you don't get a repair, you will get them fired.

Sorry to hear you got it mate =(

The warranty is 3 years, although i just bought the base unit off of eBay for 60 quid and it's working fine from there...

With my experience just keep trying it and it might go away, unlikely, but possible =)

Well finally getting around to sending my one off this week. Bloody ridiculous the nonsense you have to go through testing it even though you've told them you've done everything that is suggested on the xbox.com support website. Not paying a penny either and I know my rights as a consumer.

My HDMI Premium showed thr 3 red rings today when I turned it on :(

Turned it off and back on again and it was miraculously fixed :)

Will be keeping my eye on it though. If it does go it will be the 1st of the 6 that I have owned since launch to ever give me grief.
