Out soon with WiFi capabilities, who else is looking forward to it?

A special edition red DS, has just been announced for the states, which includes the hardware, games, decal, and limited edition thumb strap.

Also the game will feature 32 tracks! Can't wait! :)

I think you mean a DS.

I want this game, but I don't think I can get it at launch since I will still be saving for the 360.

I hope it's a success.

This is my most eagerly anticipated game of the year. I'd be hyped up about this even if it didn't boast online play. Online play is just a bonus. A huge one, admittedly. :D

Around a month to go now.

Can't wait. :D

I'll probably only get a solid week of play, though, as the 360 is out the following week, and MK's brilliance will probably be overshadowed.

I honestly can't wait for this game.

I also want to pickup for my DS,
-Electroplankton
-Resident Evil DS
-Viewtiful Joe DS
-Advance Wars Dual Strike
-Castlevania
-Final Fantasy 3 (remade for the DS)

Then with all the 360 games coming out i'm gonna be seriously broke.

Not at all.

You've probably played GTA to death in the past few years (and if you hadn't, you should have).

It's Mario Kart's turn now. 9.5 rating on IGN. Yes, those harsh mofos at IGN. That's how good it is.

Pumpk1n
15/Nov/05, 12:33 AM
Well, I woulden't say that IGN is harsh at all. They give games 9.0 and above frequently. I don't trust a score like 9.5 for a rehash of a mediocre N64 game.

LCS is much better imo. Even if GTA is played to death, this is freakin amazing!

You've played both games so you could compare them ?

Pumpk1n
15/Nov/05, 01:43 AM
Well, I own LCS, and I have played Mario Kart 64 and Double Dash for the GameCube. Not to be critical or offensive, but the DS version is a port of the 64 title, with a little influence from GC's 2003 game.

I can't say that I have "played" Mario Kart DS, but I have a pretty good feeling that a racing game of that caliber, does not deserve to score any higher than much better racing games like Forza Motorsport or GT4. I mean, if IGN gives Forza and GT4 a lower rating, that's just ludacris, and a reason I don't often trust IGN's reviews.

AfroJoe
15/Nov/05, 12:28 PM
Mario Kart DS isn't a re-hash of any Mario Kart title.

It includes courses and stuff from previous games in the series, but it's a completely new game with a completely new control system. And online play as an added bonus.

Why if GT4 and Forza get a lower score is that ludicrous? Because generic borefest racers should automatically get amazing scores because they've got nice graphics? Pffffft.

Pumpk1n

Forza Motrosport and GT4 are beyond "borefests," and they definately deserve higher scores. They are very well made, they boast extremely high-production values, and have an online component that will blow you away. The dev. teams for both GT4 and Forza put loads of effort into both their games, too. That's more than can be said for Nintendo - seeing as they rely strickly on their fan-base and original series' to generate profit and revenue. Mario Kart, however, has dated graphics, an old gameplay dynamic and little value. You can only play the same few tracks over and over again before you realize, "Hey, I might have been better off with a PSP!"

Bottom-line is that there's no way in hell that Mario Kart DS deserves a 9.5. Compared to other racers on the market, I'm pretty unsure as to why it's touted so much. Just my two cents.

Also, I'm confused by the hailing of DS' online capabilities. PSP has had Online (AdHoc/Infrastructure) from launch, and many great games take advantage of them, LCS being a prime example.

IMO, Nintendo's classic games just aren't as "classic" as they used to be.

15/Nov/05, 05:29 PM
Meh, suit yourself, but personally I find Gran Turismo 4 to be one of the most boring games I've ever played. It's 6 cars, going around some nice tracks over, and over, and over. It's not even as if there's different tracks for the multitude of different competitions. There's about 12 tracks, and that's it. They're all used repeatedly in various tournaments in an attempt to make the game feel a lot bigger and more interesting than it actually is. I'm a fan of racers which bring me entertainment, and I'd take Mario Kart, F-Zero X, and even Burnout games miles ahead of some realistic simulator.

I don't know how you've come to the conclusion that there's no way in hell Mario Kart DS deserves a rating of 9.5? Have you played it? Can you really give your opinion on a game that hasn't been released yet? Mario Kart has been getting some fantastic praise all over the industry, and not just because it's an updated version of a series which has been good in the past. People knew that the Gamecube instalment (Double Dash) wasn't going to be as good as MK games were in the past, and the previews hinted that it would never be as good as the N64 version. This, however, has been completely different - I've yet to read a preview which has mentioned more than a couple of minor flaws, nor seen a review which has been anything less than all-out praise. And these are from people who have actually played the game.

DS' online capabilites are being hailed because Nintendo are a company whose consoles have always had a strong bearing on multiplay. Sony's haven't. The reason the DS (and Mario Kart in particular) are being hailed so much right now is because something like Mario Kart appeals much more to a multiplay/online audience than a GTA game does. GTA games have been designed as single-players, and I can imagine people will just feel that the multiplayer is a minor addition to add some depth to the game. This is not the situation with Mario Kart. It is a game designed particularly with multiplayer options in mind. Therefore, this version has been designed with online play in mind, and that's why it's getting so much attention in this area.

ForzaMotorsport is not some boreing similation game like GT 4, It had a mix of stragedy, reflexes and fun. I spent days just custamizing my car from decals to painy jobs to swaping engines. but I could see why alt of people find them boring its because there not fun but intense and nervracking, seeing a car in your rearview mirror creeping up on the final turn of a race or when your neck and neck withe another car on the final strightaway and beating him by just a hundreth if a second.

This is how I feel about Forza, can't say the same thing about th GranTourismo series :zip:

What you've also got to take into consideration is that Mario Kart DS is being judged by DS standards, otherwise all DS games (espicaly on graphics) compared to the likes of xbox games would get a crap rating. It is also a completly different type of game from GT and Forza. :|

Pumpk1n
19/Nov/05, 11:53 PM
right, but by DS standards, it's still not very good. For PSP standards, LCS is. IMO.

I know we kind of finished our argument, but how the hell have you come to the assumption that by DS standards its not very good?

You said you hadn't played Mario Kart, and by the sounds of things, you can't have played many other DS games either.

And what are these "DS standards" you're talking about?

DaGaz101

By DS standrads a meant compared to say the Xbox or the PS2, what i am saying is you can't possibly expect for example the graphics to come up to the standards of the xbox etc. By the I have a DS and think its brillant!!! (Y) (Y)

hahaha. and actually, it doesn't matter about the gfx on the DS, its the gameplay... and its not an exact port, it has online, new carts, customize carts, new characters, weapons, tracks, new modes.
And if this game out on the Xbox or ps2 but with upgraded gfx and upped the online limit to like 8 or 16, and even if it still stayed 4, it would still sell like hot cakes...
And you can't even play LCS online (unless you use Xbox connect :P ) and all of you need the game cartridge, you can play MK DS with 8 people with one cartridge ... but thats not online,

Yeah, it's much more difficult playing online, so you have to be quite good.

Learning to properly powerslide is a must, and knowledge of the shortcuts is very helpful, although there aren't that many new ones this time around.

Learning to block weapons is probably the most important, though. Especially in a 4-player race, in which you're just swapping places with people all the time, mainly due to the barrage of weaponry.

But yeah, it'll be good to be able to play more people that I kind of know. So hurry up and get it, learn it, and get ready to get whupped. :D

Games which currently make use of the online capabilities are:
Mario Kart DS
Tony Hawk's Sk8land (or whatever it's called)
Animal Crossing (currently not released in Europe)
Metroid: Hunters (currently not released in Europe)

Should be loads more by the end of the year, when companies start to realise how great the system is.

AfroJoe

Yeah, Animal Crossing was great, although it did get repetitve after a while.

Online play should fix that, though. Being able to go and visit other people's towns is probably the one inclusion that could make the game truly fantastic... and they've included it.
