View Full Version : HD Reference Levels
Hey, I've now got one of the new Premium 360s (with HDMI port)
I'm confused though.. On the display settings there's "Reference Levels" and I can choose Standard, Intermediate or Expanded. It says that if you choose the wrong setting for your TV it will degrade picture quality.. But I dunno what to have it on though- I can't see anything about it in my manual.
Any idea's (it's on standard at the moment)??
It's a samsung TV, I can't find model name or number though to have a look online!
Cheers
PS.. The new console seems quiter than my old ones!

It may refer to the colour and black levels....you can set it to the levels of a PC monitor and see the difference in rich deeper colours, blacker blacks etc.
I'm sure the functionality was added in a Dashboard update quite a while back.
On your Sammy you should be good to use any, so just flick through them and see which you prefer...I have 2 Sammy's and no problems using those settings on either.
Have a read of this:

I would go for Expanded on a Sammy.

I still dont really know what one to have it on though- expanded seems a bit too dark, and some comments have said that you shouldnt use intermediate because its in the middle?
Strange.. I'll have to just try them all out and see what I prefer lol

As mentioned above expanded gives the best picture available on most LCD's. It relates to he range of blacks available. Best game to try it out on is Gears of War, with the largely grey pallete used you will see the difference between all the settings.
