The BBFC has rejected Rockstar's Manhunt 2, banning the controversial title from sale anywhere in the UK.

Both PlayStation 2 and Wii versions of the game have been banned, with the BBFC unable to recommend cuts or removal of content to make it suitable for public sale.

"Where possible we try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material which contravenes the Board’s published Guidelines. In the case of Manhunt 2 this has not been possible," revealed David Cooke, director of the BBFC.

"Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing.

"There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game," he continued.

The BBFC has stated that the sequel to Manhunt is far more brutal and bleak than the original title, which was granted an 18 rating in 2003.

"Although the difference should not be exaggerated the fact of the game’s unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer, together with the different overall narrative context, contribute towards differentiating this submission from the original Manhunt game," added Cooke.

"Against this background, the Board’s carefully considered view is that to issue a certificate to Manhunt 2, on either platform, would involve a range of unjustifiable harm risks, to both adults and minors, within the terms of the Video Recordings Act, and accordingly that its availability, even if statutorily confined to adults, would be unacceptable to the public."

The last game to be banned by the BBFC was Carmageddon in 1997. Publisher Rockstar has the right to appeal against the BBFC's decision.

Rockstar was not available at the time of writing.

When did a board of namby pamby middleage tards start deciding what I can or cant enjoy?

What do you think of their decision?

Well....[Insert swear word here]

The thing is, I dont see why a game can get banned. I can garentee that worse movies have been released.

Well a game can and should be banned for numerous reasons, but the fact that we haven't seen it doesn't mean we can be credited with saying that the BBFC made a wrong decision.

Personally I'm not shocked, I mean the last one was pretty bad in the story behind it and the methods used but I didn't like the game, story, controls anything, seemed very dull to me but then again those kind of sadistic games or movies never appeal.

I think there is a slight difference between a Movie and a Video Game rating wise, mainly because in one you are viewing it, but the other you are actively taking part and determinging how the "deed" is committted.

So in a weird way it kind of promotes a murderous mentality to it.

Yea it's not Illegal to own a copy of Manhunt in the UK, it's just illegal for a store based in the UK to sell it or advertise it.

With it freely available to import goods from any EU State without facing Import Duties or TAX, just do that.

How can you dispute the actions of them considering they have played it and seen it in all it's "glory" and you haven't?

So for all you know it could be the best decision they ever made. Ban's always have a stigma attached to them, that they are some what very disturbing but I'm yet to see it.

Bans = £££

The best publicity the game can get in other regions is `Banned in the UK'.

It was banned because it has a clip of CCTV footage of that 12yr old boy that was beaten/tortured in it.

Videogames have been the band-aid solution for all the ills of the world. I can see giving it a AO rating but banning the game outright doesn't end world hunger, child abuse, murder, rape, war, etc, etc, etc. It's just a scapegoat and the problem is finding an easy target usually isn't the correct one.

It was a Law & Order game, not CSI... :p

Was it a likeliness of the CCTV footage, or an actual CCTV footage of that part?... :s

It was banned but later released after publishers appealed the decision, something Take2/Rockstar can do for up to 6 Weeks after the decision on classification has been made.. So there is still time.

Manhunt 2 on eBay will rocket up in price because of the ban, it could end up being quite good for the devs.

Why? I can not see how they can benefit at all. Also cant see how the Publishers would benefit from it.

I’m British, and after hearing this news I must declare how completely I don’t care. When I played Manhunt one all I could see was a disappointing game at best that screamed “Look what we can legally put on your tele” all the way through. Violence in games is cool with me, a way to vent I see it as. But a whole game that shows no hint of plot or game play, created specifically so that people would buy it just for the violent content seems a bit of a waste to me.
