Take-Two representitive recently confirmed that downloadable, episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV will be found exclusively on the Xbox 360.

When it was revealed at last year's E3 that GTA IV would be hitting the 360 day-and-date with the PS3 version, episodic content on the 360 had only been deemed as "exclusive content," implying that the PS3 version would get some fan service of its own -- inspiring a heck of a lot of confusion.

Now Microsoft can add another trick to their can of worms with this statement issued to GI.biz:

The Grand Theft Auto IV episodic content is exclusive to Xbox 360.

Keeping it short, sweet and simple, the news certainly doesn't make Sony's position in the console war look any better. If anything it makes Peter Moore's justifications for tattooing a multiplatform game on his arm (yes we know its fake) look a little less obscure.

The exclusive content is expected to hit the Marketplace during 2008's fiscal year, pinning it down within a year of GTA IV's October 19 ship date.

Do you think MS paid to make it exclusive?

Does that really matter?

Well I'm going to avoid your question and state that Episodic Content is something I hope the gaming industry never uses.

At the moment to a degree it's alright, the content is a couple of quid for a few Maps and it doesn't bother me and most games rarely have more than a few Map Packs and even if it does I only ever buy one if that.

However with this type of content, I think developers will start removing elements from the original game to enable an earlier shipping date than you are forced into digital distribution where content can not be sold or traded.

Therefore than can kiss my ass with exclusive anything!

Take it with a pitch of salt! it might say exclusive for now but you know yourselves the ps3 will shift when this game arrives so lets see how the sales are first..either way i'll have all 3 machines again by then so who cares..i will say that it will play better on the ps3 due to them using Blu-Rays so i guess if the 360 does have exclusive and its deemed worth it and not just add-ons missions and MP maps ala Saints Row style then i will have to purchase it for the 360.

Could this content be exclusive because they can't fit it onto a DVD!?

The price of manufacturing 3 DVD's is still less than 1 Blu-rry.

We have been used to using multiple disks since the days of the PSone and Saturn so developers so it doesnt make that much difference to gameplay or content.

Didn't Rockstar say in an article(or interview) that Microsoft paid Rockstar $50 million dollars for it to be exclusive to the Xbox 360... (:/)

Silly of Microsoft to pay $50 mill for a couple hours of play I say, still if there are people withthe PS3 and 360 that are on the fence then this may convince them, but 50 million dollars worth? No way.

$50 mill... I wonder how much Rockstar are worth. It's got to be bs because of the $50 mill. You could buy a developer for that much cash.

Yeah, no matter how much of the market it attracts, it is no where near worth that much. Either someonehas got there wires crossed and got the wrong number, or there has been a serious exageration somewhere. IMO episodic coent is bad, only a matter of time efore devs start getting lazy/greedy, sen out half finsished games and nickle and dime the customers.

Typical MS - paying silly money or trying to buy every company out to get the games on the 360. Me i ain't fussed but if im honest would rather play it on the ps3, so if this content is worth it then i'll have to buy it for the 360 aswell.

Woot woot roll on October 19th (fingers crossed)

Erm, it's not just a couple of hours content, they said it's roughly about 24 hours more gameplay per episode.

MS will also make there money back, some hardcore fans will buy 360s just for this game + the content, it might also cost 2400points per episode which i'd gladly pay tbh.

mmm, sounds good for 360 owners. Its not the fault of M$ if they want to do this really, im sure sony will pay to get other games and content exclusive to their system in the future.

Basically it differs from from normal content in that it implies that the content will be released like "episodes" in order to further lengthen or extend the game.

Much like Episodes it's not just 1, it is likely you will get a good few "episodes" of content.

It's also a proposed method of distributing games so they can release them earlier, maybe cheaper, and see some return on long development times that take over 2 YEars and cost Millions... Unless it's a Move Game for that they hire some Korean Kid for 1 Dollar a Year... He get's it done in a Week.

I may be wrong but that was the impression I had of it, I'm pretty new to it all but I think Half Life had "Episodic Content"

Edit

Wiki has got my back on this...

Episodic gaming refers to a distribution system of selling computer and video games in a sequence of episodes, akin to a serialized novel, where each episode is sold as a separate purchase and in the end together form a continuous story or experience. Episodic games have become increasingly popular of late with the advent of low cost digital distribution methods.

Episodic content also limits the amount of copies being traded in and resold. That is where developers and publishers are losing most cash at present.
